I am not trying to start a war...

Several years ago, when I was on the Gunbroker forum, I was doing research for an article I was writing. I wanted to hear from Vets and those with experience on the battlefield effectiveness of the .556 versus the 7.62x51mm. I was very clear it was for research. Never worked out. Those who responded ended up in huge and angry debates, not with me, but with each other. It got nasty and I learned nothing. I hope asking questions about the "right" cam doesn't have the same result. Here are the parameters

1968 Barracuda notchback
It had a 225 slant six but I have a 71' 360 for it now and 727 tranny
no a/c
front disc brake conversion
15" wheels all around
.355 or .373 DanaS

Like everyone else, I want the fastest car that can be built but, here is the usual catch. streetable every day.
I don't plan to race it at the strip
I may have to defend Mopar's honor when called upon at a stop light but this would be rare

At this point the plan is to have the motor rebuilt .030 over, aluminum heads and intake, headers, 4 bbl and all that. I am thinking the Lunati Voodoo cam with the .494 lift, Edlebrock with .484 lift, or Mopar Purple Shaft also at .484 lift. Are those the right cam for what I want to do? Thanks for your opinions. I am not making up my mind for some time but wanted to get informed opinioins, which leaves me out, and make my decision as I buy parts for the build.

The thing is, you've already STARTED a "war" LOL

There are SO many ways to go, and it depends on so many variables

How much money you want to spend?

How decent fuel mileage you want?

What is your definition of "streetable?"

Inspector71 01-31-2014 06:50 AM

Thanks

That was what I hoped to afford. Like anyone else, I don't want to pay more than I have to but I am not willing to do this on the cheap and regret it later. So I'll pay whatever I have to. Streetable means it does not overheat all the time at idle, runs smooth, and all that. I don't care about gas mileage at all. I'm in this for the fun. Thanks for replying.

The 484 Mopar cam is a good performer. It does need a 3.55 gear 3.73 would be better along with a 2500 stall converter. I would get a zero deck piston & shoot for 10/1 compression with the aluminum heads. OR ??

Get you an MRL Performance Motor.... He's just up the road in Michigan...
http://www.mrlperformance.com/

Or are you looking to do it yourself?

What I would suggest....
Like Lynn said.. 0 deck pistons... KB's
Eddy heads gone threw and set up for cam and valve height, and only mild gasket match and clean up.
Airgap intake
Holley 750 carb
Roller VooDoo Cam or the Hughes whiplash cam
Good to run on 87 Octane fuel and not a lot of maintenance.

Oh Ya... I would go the 7.62..... :)

Just My 2 cents....

Inspector71 01-31-2014 12:36 PM

Thanks

Great advice. Roller cams. Hmmm. Never thought about them before. What is a "7.62?"

I had decided on either a 3.55 or 373 sure grip. I am not building the motor. I am too new at this, I am still trying to figure out how to get the cables off the little doors of the heater box ha ha

That set up is what I have in my Duster I run the Performer, 750 eddy carb, and Purple shaft 484 lift 280 duration, headers with 2.5 in pipes to the rear with flowmaster 44s,,, the car runs real strong and I have right now 276:1 rear and like 1600 rpm stall and it is a little doggy off the line but anywhere from 10-40 mph and you mat it and it will smoke the tires off it through 2nd gear of the Torque flight 904 automatic...Bill

RacerHog 01-31-2014 03:07 PM

7.62 Was the round you were talking about starting a war over....lol

My 2 cents....
4.10 in the rear
3,000 Stall convertor
I Like 2-1/2", But 2 works in most cases
:)

RacerHog 01-31-2014 03:12 PM

Bill...You need to move up to a VooDoo Roller and a 3.55 gear and a convertor that will flash to 3000.... Just my 2 cents... :)

Not going to recommend a cam, but I will say mopar purple shafts are old out dated news and aren't worth the box they come in.

Spend the money and buy a good set of adjustable rockers, yes they are pricey but well worth it. This corner I see cut time after time on this forum. Proper valve train geometry can not be set up with out adjustment. I like the comp cams roller tip rockers, have bought 3 sets of them.

Hey uncle Bob, If I spend any more money right now I will be dead or divorced or both...unless you won the lottery or something and are offering me a payday...LOL...I will get to it in a month or so...Still recooping from the surgery and dont want to be lifting yet.. But dont forget I built this to be a driver and I need to get the transmisson done and a converter first and for most...It looks and sounds good but doesnt move very well... Next step will be the 8.75 rear but I was thinking 3:23 sure grip and the list goes on &on&on...Bill

Awwwww Shucks Bob you are a good friend and now Im feeling all warm and fuzzy...LMAO...Bill

pro-tech 02-01-2014 06:40 AM

If I knew then what I know now I would have a roller cam and adjustable rockers... But at the time I didnt relize that you could put rollers in without doing major machine work..So I went with the flat Tappet style...Live and Learn Or Is it Live and Let Die??? No that was a song and a movie right??? BILL

Good point Purple..... You always have to look at Ma Mopars Valve Train Geometry. So many people put the wrong length push rod in there motors.
