rookie racer

my dad ,brother and i recently bought a 1972 plymouth duster with a 440 bored .060 , with 11.5/1 pistons and a tunnel ram sporting dual 750 edelbrock carbs. i was wondering if anyone had any camshaft suggestions or tips they wanted to share. the car ran 6.40s in its day, but i feel it could do better..

What are the specs on the cam that is in it now?

HARDCHARGER69 02-27-2007 11:30 AM

i just bought a mopar cam that specs out at .620 lift and 324 advertised duration. its mechanical that makes power from 4000 to 7000 rpm. That sounded just right for us. what do you think?

blue 68 gts 02-27-2007 11:47 AM

It ran mid 6's? On a 1/4 or 1/8th mile track?

HARDCHARGER69 02-27-2007 04:44 PM

1/8 mile. but i think it will do better

79mopower 03-01-2007 08:41 AM

what kind of heads are on it? any idea what they flow?

HARDCHARGER69 03-01-2007 09:01 PM

the heads are the stock magnum heads with quite a bit of port work done . i dont think you could get the ports any bigger. the valves are almost touching too. its got double valve springs with dampers, and titanium keepers and retainers

79mopower 03-02-2007 07:05 AM

id say go with a roller, maybe 650 lift and the about the same duration. i had damn near the same combo with a indy single 4 intake

HARDCHARGER69 03-02-2007 07:43 AM

we thought about that. the cost is the only thing holding us back. but its in our future. any tips on advancing or retarding the cam? ive heard big blocks run better retarded. but we have always built em straight up.

79mopower 03-02-2007 08:58 AM

i always put mine straight up. i hear the same but not willing to disassemble mine to find out. good luck.

HARDCHARGER69 03-02-2007 09:19 AM

thanks for the posts. i think we will do the same.

79mopower 03-02-2007 03:20 PM

no problem, let me know what happens.

HARDCHARGER69 04-01-2007 08:21 PM

We Got The Motor Installed Over Spring Break And It Runs Like A Top! We Were Worried About The Size Of The Cam But It Is Running Great.

79mopower 04-14-2007 04:53 PM

thats cool

blue 68 gts 02-26-2008 06:17 PM

I'm still having a hard time it ran mid 6's on the 1/4 mile...
