I must be krazy!
This all started about two months ago when I bought my grandson a scooter, he’s going to turn 14 this winter and will be able to get a endorsement on his learners permit to ride it. Well I made the mistake of getting on it and going for a ride, twenty minutes later I wanted a motorcycle again , up until I got married to my second wife I always had something to ride. I sold my last bike twenty eight years ago so I dropped a few bucks and bought this, the bike is like new with only ninty two hundred miles on it…

That is a clean heavy beast. Should make for some fun times.

Im looking for a something for my grandson to learn to ride on, he can get a bike learners permit at 14 also and I would like to see him get get all the road mile experience he can before he is turned loose at sixteen. He wants a sport bike “ Crotch rocket” according to him which is what Ive always had but I would like him to ride everything else first. You don’t need a hundred and twenty hp to kill your self on a bike when you can do it with forty. If he listens and learns well I will give him whatever bikes we have and then he can use them to get the bike he wants.

Good Looking Scooter !!!!! Nothing wrong with riding a bike, Just have always remember to leave yourself a way out of a situation while riding. People dont see you, you see them.... I dont ride anymore because of where i live "Way too many people that dont have any busness behind the wheel of anything moving, cant drive for shit"....
Anyway... Hope he and you enjoy doing a little riding together and hope he learns a lot from you on the safe way to ride..... Good Luck my friend... And remind him the old saying... "Ride to Live but Live too ride !!! Safe Travels Cheers |
It’s funny we live three blocks from the edge of town in three directions with half of his buddies living on gravel. So my first instructions about his scooter was how speed and the front brake are not his friend on gravel, it took just two weeks before the ten year old ride had road rash, he was ok but it will take a little paint and $25 in plastic parts to make it look new again. I told him that’s why he didn’t get a new one, sometimes those lessons mean more than words said anyway.

Thanks Bob,
As long as I can remember to put my feet down when I stop I believe I will be okay. Here’s a true story from when I was 20 years old or so, we had two customers who were brothers That were Bachelor farmers in their late 80s. One day they were in the shop checking on the repair of their car when they started talking about the new Harley they just bought, they figured they would share the bike and only bought the one. When they came back to pick up the car they told me that one of them had dumped the bike at a stop sign and the other brother really chewed him out for such a dumb move, well it turned out that the other brother did the same exact thing the very next day at the same stop sign.:) So if I can remember to put the feet down I will be in good shape… |
I rode all my life up until a few years back. Always be aware of people approaching you making a left turn. Left turn non-yielders account for 85% of motorcycle accidents. Other than that, enjoy the ride!!

Forty years ago I saw first hand a car pull out in front of a bike, it didn’t help that the bike was going to fast and had a passenger. The aftermath was pretty gruesome, driver of the bike moving around on his hands and knees moaning coughing up chunks. I tried to get him to lay still, he died from his injuries. This happened right outside the front of my shop. Driver of the car did get a ticket but I don’t remember what it was.
A few years earlier a woman pulled out in front of bike just one block farther down the street, the bike hit the driver’s door and the rider went over the top of the car. The bike actually went into the car killing the driver. The bike was speeding at the time of collision but no charges. Ive always ridden like nobody saw me and was trying to hit me, defensive driving is a must. |

Long story short, it took brother about a year and a half to be able to be ok and back t work with his wounds.... He is in his 70's now and still rides his Motorcycles.... Rides with the Christian Bike Club called Chariots of Light.... So you always have to leave a way out and always be on you toes and keep your head on a swivel ..... But that's a good tidbit of info... I didn't know the percentage was that high for that monover... |
I only knew it was 85% because it was on a promotion exam.

I am a firm believer of dressing for the slide not the ride. I roast a lot when riding in the summer but I am here today thanks to having full gear on when I laid my bike down. I spent 3x the money on my gear than I did my bike...of course I did get a ridiculous good deal on the bike from my brother in law. I would look into a motorcycle training class too. Might have to wait a little bit for him due to age. Here you can get your endorsement just by completing the class and taking certificate to DMV..
|
The class would be a great idea but there is nothing available in this area.

That’s the best part about bikes, they don’t need much space so you can have many of them!
I have to admit that I’m looking forward to next season, I’ve always enjoyed the Mississippi river valley I have friends in Dubuque so I think the first weekend I ride I’ll start there and write up to South St. Paul where I have a daughter sounds like a good way to spend a week. In the past on sport bikes fifty or so miles was about how much I would spend on the bike at a time. Leaning forward on the bars with the buzz coming in the bars my hands would get numb so I’ll give this a try. |
Sounds like lots of fun and a nice easy ride.. Good Spring time ride!!! Cheers!!
