318/390 Stroker
I have a 72 Dart with a 318. Im looking for a good small block project to get some serious power. I was looking at two choices: 360/426 stroker from a block in my shed, or 318/390 from the motor in my car. the 360/426 is going to be a pricey endeavor so I was looking for info on the 318/390 project. Does anything need to be done to the block (notching, etc.)? Can any stock bottom end parts be used? Does anyone know where to find a cheap kit? Im going for a sleeper with this project.
The motor currently has 340 heads, performer rpm intake, 650 cfm Edel carb, and mopar nostalgic cam with .484 lift and .284 duration (advertised). I don't know anything about the bottom end or the numbers on the heads because this is how the motor came when I bought this car. Ideally, If I went with the 318/390, I'd like to be able to use the parts I have now. Will the 340 heads flow enough? And would a different cam be better? Im looking for 400+ hp with good torque. Thanks for all yalls input. |

unless youre set on a stroker, you dont need it if youre only shooting for 400rwhp. im running a .030 over 340 with 9 to 1 compression, small valve heads, good intake and carb...headers...and im making around 380 rwhp. that is with ported stock 360 iron heads, 1.88 intake 1.60 exhaust valves...528 cam, 1 5/8 headers. 3700lb car running 12.40s...imagine if i had a set of edelbrock heads, 2.02/1.60, same cam, high compression pistons, etc...there is no doubt that i would easily pick up 20 more rwhp. i think that the heads alone would do that...no need for a big stroker.

engine masters magazine winter 2006 features a 318 build-up that claims 415 peak horsepower (dyno). the build is by steve dulcich who doesn't need any introduction. the engine uses 318 block, crank and 360 heads (for the 1.88 1.60 valves). if you can't find this mag at your local store, check out phr online. if you can't find it, post back and i'll give you some details. it's not a real expensive engine, just some good hypereutetic pistons, hydraulic cam and intake. there is not a lot of expensive machine work involved (beyond the usual). strokers are cool, but not cheap.
