68 GTX Steering
 

Hi everyone. I'm a new member and would love some advice!! My power steering unit in my 68 leaks and needs to be rebuilt but I was hoping to find a way to tighten up the steering so I can feel the bloody road with that big block in it. the steering shop says there is nothing that can be done.

The power steering is so strong my grandma could do uturns with her pinky. Any ideas or any aftermarket units that I could use instead without tons of mods invloved? I'd love to be able to feel the road in this car with that big 440 and hemi sway bar.

I was wondering the exact same thing a couple days ago. I have a charger, and Right now the engine is out, Im thinking about making a trip to the junk yard next saturday and seeing what I can find, I may be doing a complete suspension upgrade, we will see i guess.

Hi, also new here. I disliked the PS in my '70 RR six pack so much--back in the time that I had it--that I pulled it out and put a manual box in there. I'm no expert on steering, and don't know how serious or expensive you want to get. One thing you might consider is trying to find a steering arm for the box that is longer. This would have the effect of making the steering "quicker" and lower the apparrent boost.

Hey thanks for responding. I appreciate the advice and I'll definately look into that. I had manual steering on my first 67 camaro and loved it once the car was rolling. How did you like your 70 rr with manual steering? Were there any disadvantages and would you do it again?

I was younger than 30 when I sold that car, I don't know if I could even drive one anymore with a manual box. I'm sure I couldn't parallel park it. You'll have to assess your arm strength, I guess

At the time I liked the manual box. I'd just sold my 69 with manual steering, later in that time frame I had a '64 426, with manual steering, so I was pretty used to it.

For me, PS didn't give near enough feedback and was too twitchy
