So, we fixed the spark plug situation and the 1979 Gerstenslager with a 440 engine will start , but it won't stay running . We are attempting to change the oil, and silly me thought that it would take 5 quarts, but in putting in 5 quarts there isn't even a smudge on the dipstick. Does anyone have any idea how much oil goes into an oil change for a 1979 440 engine? Also, on a side note, I understand from one of the posts on here that there is a 440-3 that was used in some motorhomes. Does anyone have any info on this?

Again, thank you all for your help!!

ha,, i had a friend that was changing his oil he asked me how many quarts will it take i told him 5, so he bought the filter/oil, drained the old oil put the new filter on, he calls me and said you lied! i put 5 quarts in and its not even reading on the dip stick yet, i told him to look under the truck, went out side with his phone and said well theres 5 quarts on the ground, he forgot to put the drain plug back in.

if its a motorhome engine it could take 7?
or maybe you did what my friend did,

My 440 takes 7 1/2 qts, but I also added 2" to the pan and pick up
