new guy NEEDS HELP- questions about a SB/BB swap

I have an 89 Dodge Power Ram W250 4x4. currently has a 360ci in it with a 727 auto trans. I want to put a 440ci in my truck. I just bought a 1980 440ci with a 727 auto trans. It came from a camper so not everything is postioned normally. Im not the most mechanically inclined but i know there is a difference in a small block trans and a big block trans, but i was wondering if the transfer case i have in my truck now (for the 360 setup) will bolt up to big block trans???

whoa stop right there...the 440 will bolt right up to the 727 trans...there is no need to take the trans you currently have in your truck unless there is something wrong with it, just do an engine swap and relocate/swap out the motor mounts

the only thing i can think of is you MIGHT have to do a little work to the front of your current 727 trans to get it to bolt up, but as far as i know you do not need to and if you do than all the parts you will need will be on the front of the 727 currently mounted on the 440...by keeping the 727 you currently have in your truck you wont have to touch the transfer case at all

or you could look at putting a 4 speed in behind it...thats what i would do if i had a 3/4 ton and was looking at a 440

Welcome 89PowerRam250.

There are 2 different 727 one for small blocks and one for big block so he was right in getting the 727 with the 440. a Small block 727 will not bolt up to a 440.

DITTO! DITTO! I am considering a 318>440 swap in my 3/4 ton. just because I found a 440 and 727 sitting in a motorhome in the yard.

there are two different 727 tranny's
i dont think the one from the 318 will work on the 440

All are correct on the BB/SB 727 not matching. But a question is will the "new" BB 727 bolt to the transfer case for a 4x4? "Quick Commissioner Gordon! Send the Timmy signal!" [78D200] He'll set you all straight. Good luck.

is it a maried unit? or divorced if divorced should be no problem. married u may have to change tail shafts.

You will need to convert the 727 in the camper to a 4wd case as the t-case in your 89 W250 is mated to the tranny (divorced cases were earlier in the Dodge truck series).

You will need the camper mounts as they should line up with the frame as the frames did not change that much as far as the motor locations go over the years (til you get into the major body changes).

If you have a TBI setup now on your 360, you will need an inline regulator if you plan on running carb.
