New here, Contemplating on picking up a Dodge.

Hey everybody, new guy from Houston, TX here. I started with trucks, I have a 2011 RCSB Silverado 6.0/ 76mm Turbo, building a 1968 C10 383 Stroker/ Vortec V3 Supercharger. Well my buddy has a 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner and I love the damn car and have been wanting one badly!!!!!

Well I was talking to my mom the other day and low and behold my step dad has 1968 2 door Dodge Coronet 440 with a 318, and he's gonna give it to me free if I want it. It was his when he was 16, I don't have all the details yet, not sure how long it has been sitting but my mom sent me pictures.

What do you guys think? Not sure what the inside looks like so I may have to take a road trip to take a look at it. It definitely looks different than the 70 RR but I think I will like it once I get it looking the way I want it. Here's pics of my buddy's Plymouth.

Welcome aboard. Free isn't always better. Your buddies car looks like a better starting point by far.

Sorry, maybe I worded it wrong. My buddies car isn't an option, he will never sell it because it was his dads car. I just want one like it, and I was offered the Coronet for free. I know they have there differences, but they are similar and I believe I will be happy with the outcome once it's done.

I will definitely be swapping out the 318 for a 440 and an F1 Procharger, at least that would be what I want to do. It may be a while as seeing how I just bought the 68 C10 a couple weeks ago and already got a motor being machined for it with a bunch of $$$ tied up in it and it's already road ready and legal, so the Coronet will have to get in line.

I read it wrong and I don't want to scare you but the free one is in pretty rough shape. Go take a good look in person. It could be just like a boat when it comes to pouring money into it.

I have seen worst. With the rear window gone & open to the elements the floor and trunk are probably rusted out. The body itself looks to be in good shape

Yeah I definitely have seen the money pit side of it. My friend had 10 grand dropped into his before it even looked like something that could be brought back to life. 3 years ago his looked a 100 times worst than mine with trees growing through it and no floor whatsoever. But I can definately see the finished product in my head and it looks so CLEAN!!!

I am worried about it being open to the elements, I don't like those windows being gone, but the body seems to look fair. How readily are body panels & parts for these when stuff does have to be replaced?

Welcome!

If you look at a 68 RR I think you'll see how close the Coronet looks like it (at least to me they look close minus the grill area). Definitely look it over good as nothing bring the suck more than thinking you found a great project that turns out to be a lot more than you thought. Ask them to pull it out onto pavement or at least packed gravel.

Welcome to the forum.... I agree on getting it on solid ground and looking at the underside.. You are right, the body from the top doesn't look that bad.. Not great but not that bad. Be very honest with yourself and determine how much you can do your self and how much you will have to pay, barter or trade to get done. If you are comfortable with that go for it.. If not at least get it out and part it out...... JMHO....

Soooooooooopo, i talked to my stepdad today, heres a little more info on the 68 Coronet 440 :

The Coronet was parked in about 1983, because the distributor went out. *

Rear floor pans are rusted away. *

Some parts got robbed to fix another car(shackles gone, something missing in front wheel)?

At some point the ignition was bypassed to a switch underneath the dash to start.

3 speed automatic
Gear ratio?
318-2 barrel
Positrac
Bucket seats swapped in from van

AC was working when parked

Power steering and brakes

Manual Windows and locksw

Trying to get the VIN, find the title, and get some pics of the inside.
