Steering coupler

Hello everyone, I'm a new member but long time Mopar owner. I need your help. Was replacing steering wheel on 69 road runner I built for my son, and we have pulled the shoes out of the steering coupler and can't get it back together. Steering column is loose and moves back and forth but shoes will not go back into the case. Can get them half way in but they stop right there. What are we missing or doing wrong?

Here you go. The missing #1- is fill with grease 1/2" down from top.

Steering Coupler

Dan,
Thanks for the information and diagrams regarding the steering coupler. I am ordering the Steering Shaft Repair Kit today and should have tomorrow. I thought there needed to be grease in there, but there was nothing there when it came apart. Need to get the car ready for the Nationals coming up August 11th. I purchased this car when my son was 2 and have rebuilt a large portion of it over the years, before I actually gave it to him. Been going out to the Nationals for 17 or 18 years now, and he still loves it. Says it's better than Christmas! If you have any tips on installing the new steering wheel, please let me know. I'm going to buy a small diamond file today to clean up the spline on the steering shaft, since we can't get the new wheel on.

Sincerely,

Corey D. Rose Sr.

I just did one of those a couple months ago. You’ve got a great diagram above. Follow it good and be very careful banging on the column as I found out older columns collapse easily and then don’t fit back on correctly. Also, I added one of these to assist. As I understand these were an recall item or were put on as an added safety / handling piece. It may not be exact for your application but I’m sure you can find one. Good luck!
