904 Challenger Transmission leak

I have a 1973 Challenger 318 with the automatic 904 tranny. I recently serviced the trans changing the fluid ,the filter, gasket, and adjusting the bands. I just purchased the car and it was sitting for six years before this was was done. Now I am getting a pretty major leak. It looks like it is coming from where the shifter linkage hooks to the tranny. Can anyone tell me if you need to pull the trans to change that seal? Or maybe just drop the pan again? Any info would be appreciated.

You don't need to remove the trans, You can pry the seal out from the top. Clean it first. It is a little tricky to get the new seal installed. I would get an extra seal just in case. The factory has a special tool. If you have a BIG C clamp & socket to fit over the shafts Some silicon grease on the seal and some sealer on the outer part. Put a block of wood on the pan to protect it.and tighten it down until the seal is seated. Just make sure it goes in straight

The most reliable way is to drop the pan and the valve body then you can do it outside the car...M2C

Thank you both for the infornation. Not sure how I'm going to tackle it yet. Bremereric when you say drop the pan and valve body and do it outside the car do you mean install the seal on my bench and then just put it back together or take those parts off and then I have access to the seal?

That seal can go on the valve body shifter stem outside the car...
