Heads and cams. You get that motor breathing right and you can get over 500 easy. What RPM range are you looking to get the power from? low end? mid? high? Also what is the motor in/going in?

I am building a 440 that came out of a 1978 plymouth trailduster. To start the engine was missing when i bought the truck. I diagnosised the engine and found that cylinders 3 and 5 had no compression. Pulled the heads found a blow head gasket and the block had a 1/4 deep cut across the deck of the block. So I pulled the engine. disassembled. cleaned block in a costic tank. I bought 99 Nickel rod. I used a rose bud tip on a tourch and spent almost 2 hours heating the entire block to 300 degrees and started welding the blow out in the deck. I took the block to the machine shop had the deck milled .010. Had it bored .030. I took the stock connecting rods, had them shot peened, cleaned the casting flash of the beam and mirror finshed the rod. This took over 2 and 1/2 lbs out of the whole set of rods which is less rotating wieght. I found a set of 906 heads I gasket matched to the intake and polished the exhaust ports. I put 2.10 intake and 1.8 exhaust Ferrea racing valves with step down necks and swirl polished. I replace the valve guides, and put intake and exhaust sets in it. On any mopar engine the Valve Stem hieghts are important. All the stem hieghts are within .003 of each other. I am putting forged pistons in with moly rings. It has a strong 9.7:1 compression. I found a forged steel crank that a guy had turned .010 .010 and is straight. Had the engine balanced. The Camshaft is a comp cam with 480 lift 280 advertised duration at .050 it is 230 duration. I am running 440 Source full roller rockers. I am running a dual plane edelbrock performer rpm with a 650 4150 holley carberator. I took the distributor and change the advance curve and has a total of 36 degrees at 3000 rpm. I am putting headman long tube headers on. I have dynosim which is a computer program that you have to put all the info and it gives you HP and Tourque. I know for a fact the Dyno Sim is within 2% of being correct. It said this engine at 2500 rpm will have 565 ftlbs of torque and at 5000 rpm it has 480 hp. There are a few things you want to watch when building it. Stem hieghts, Rod stretch and piston pin location. This all depends on the CC of the chamber in the heads. Chysler had 3 different rist pin to piston head hieghts. This is very important when figuring you compression ratio. When i am finished i will have around $4000 in this engine. Thanks to all the posted about balancing a 440 It was internally balanced since i found the steel crank

Trailduster, you may want to up the cfm on your carb. $4000 isn't bad, I think I have $6000 my cost with my 440, that is parts at the wholesale value without the typical 30-50%, also not including my labor.

how u gettin whole sale parts? im buildin my 440 as well
