Round 2 Qualifying

Friday
Results for Qualifying Round 2
MADISON, Ill. - ST. LOUIS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 14th annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals

l
Listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

7:38 p.m. A lot of people were worried about the weather reports, but here we are starting the second scheduled session.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.736/206.04, Now #20 Best prior run: 12.015/80.23, Was #27 Rickie Jones is on the bump spot at 6.712.

I don't have much of a comment on this one. Since it was a single it was easy to hear what was going on during the run, and I sure didn't hear (or see) much to complain about. Chalk this one up as a decent pass that just isn't quick enough to make the show. WJ will start fresh tomorrow since he didn't make the top 12 cutoff.

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.762/204.14, Now #23 Best prior run: 8.719/105.87, Was #27
Right Lane: Dave River Runs 7.257/187.47, Now #27 Best prior run: 6.893/198.03, Was #26

No help here for either team. Left Lane: John Gaydosh Jr Runs 6.874/200.53, Now #26 Best prior run: 6.866/200.38, Was #26 Right Lane: Danny Gruninger Runs 6.763/203.89, Now #25 Best prior run: 6.765/204.76, Was #25 No one is able to improve so far.

Left Lane: Mark Hogan Runs 8.225/112.34, Now #24 Best prior run: 6.763/204.82, Was #24
Right Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.715/205.69, Now #13 Best prior run: 6.726/206.26, Was #17

Erica steps up but not enought to get in.

Left Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.757/204.51, Now #22 Best prior run: 6.761/204.32, Was #22
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.736/205.98, Now #14 Best prior run: 6.716/206.61, Was #14

Left Lane: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 6.698/206.20, Now #7 Best prior run: 6.736/205.72, Was #21
Right Lane: Rickie Jones Runs 6.732/205.22, Now #13 Best prior run: 6.712/205.98, Was #12

Rickie Jones is still hanging onto the bump spot at 6.712.Until now, that is. Humphrey reels off one of the better passes this session and bumps Rickie out.

Left Lane: Bob Yonke Runs 23.674/32.86, Now #20 Best prior run: 6.735/205.51, Was #20
Right Lane: Vinnie Deceglie Runs 6.715/206.48, Now #12 Best prior run: 6.712/207.27, Was #12

Yonke doesn't get off the line cleanly and is coasting by 200 feet. Deceglie loses just a hair.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.705/206.26, Now #10 Best prior run: 6.729/206.07, Was #19
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.732/206.32, Now #12 Best prior run: 6.712/207.75, Was #11

Anderson's going to be a lot happier with this pass than the one which came before it. He's in, all the way up to 10th.The Jegs car loses a couple of hundredths.

Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.696/205.79, Now #7 Best prior run: 6.720/205.63, Was #19
Right Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 6.733/204.60, Now #12 Best prior run: 6.709/205.26, Was #11

Stanfield makes sure no one forgets about his team with a stout pass. He moves deep into the order.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.728/205.47, Now #19 Best prior run: 6.718/198.09, Was #19
Right Lane: Rodger Brogdon Runs 6.716/205.35, Now #10 Best prior run: 6.701/207.40, Was #10

Neither car likes the added humidity.

Just as the next pair was being pulled into the water, we began to get rain. According to all the reports this is the leading edge of a major storm. Therefore, we're done for the day and any qualifying completed will stand. We'll start with Round 3 in all the Pro classes tomorrow.

Round 1 Elininations

Sunday
Results for Elimination Round 1
MADISON, Ill. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 14th annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals:

W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

(W) Johnny Gray (NTB GXP) 0.048 6.687 205.29
(L) Rickie Jones (Elite GXP) -0.008(R) 6.684 205.76

11:55 a.m. It's a great day here on the Mississippi, with a low cloud cover and occasional periods of bright sunshine.
Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 55 percent, barometer 29.22 inches, adjusted altitude 2,440 feet, track temperature 98 degrees. This one's over at the starting line as Jones throws away a possible win. Neither car showed any sign of problems at all so it looks like the track is prime for Pro Stocks.

(W) Greg Stanfield (Nitrofish GXP) 0.025 6.649 206.76
(L) Shane Gray (Tire Kingdom GXP) -0.013(R) 6.687 206.23

It's another red light. For Stanfield, it's simply business as usual. He lays down a highly effective run. I'm convinced Greg is going to have a big role in the outcome of this season; why he's being largely ignored by other media types is a mystery to me. This team going to make some big noise before we're done this year.
Greg Stanfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.988 sec., 330ft-2.775, 660ft-4.270/164.21 mph, 1,000ft-5.560. Shane Gray's incremental times: 60ft-1.003 sec., 330ft-2.798, 660ft-4.300/163.29 mph, 1,000ft-5.595.

(W) Greg Anderson (Summit Racing Equipment GXP) 0.031 6.645 207.85
(L) Kurt Johnson (Mark Christopher Cobalt) 0.041 6.656 207.18

These guys were coworkers and pretty much came to age together. Now they're butting heads on the starting line.
Anderson leaves first and then simply outruns his old pal. He's on the top end explaining that he's far from being where he wants to be, but feels the team is making progress.
Greg Anderson's incremental times: 60ft-0.996 sec., 330ft-2.787, 660ft-4.278/164.67 mph, 1,000ft-5.562.Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.995 sec., 330ft-2.785, 660ft-4.279/164.37 mph, 1,000ft-5.569.

(W) Warren Johnson (K&N Filters GXP) 0.069 6.685 207.08
(L) Ron Krisher (Valvoline Cobalt) 0.114 6.666 206.86

Johnson is 15 - 4 against Krisher in prior events. From the newer generation we take a step back. The combined age on the starting line is 123 years. A whole bunch of people have already written the winningest driver in Pro Stock history as being washed up.
In classic WJ form, maybe just to be contrary, Johnson shows he's still got the stuff as he takes this win on a holeshot.

(W) Mike Edwards (Penhall/K&N/Interstae GXP) 0.031 6.628 208.42
(L) V. Gaines (Kendall Oil Avenger) 0.035 6.685 206.89

Edwards just keeps turning up the heat. He runs his quickest ET of the weekend. Gaines matched his qualifying effort but that's not enough today. Mike Edwards' incremental times: 60ft-0.991 sec., 330ft-2.776, 660ft-4.265/165.13 mph, 1,000ft-5.547. V. Gaines' incremental times: 60ft-1.003 sec., 330ft-2.804, 660ft-4.304/163.79 mph, 1,000ft-5.596.

(W) Justin Humphreys (RaceRedi Motorsports GXP) 0.037 6.679 205.44
(L) Rodger Brogdon (Kent Services & Trucking GX 0.032 DQ-Centerline

Brogdon has been making big noise, and is looking to take a place at the top of the class. It was a good race until far down the track, when Brogdon's car made a massive move to the center line and then a nasty dart coming back to contact the retaining wall. The car went over on its way to the wall, and the front mounted fuel cell began dumping its contents into a decent sized fire.
Luckily, Humphreys was ahead and Brogdon passed behind him pretty closely.
That was about a scary as I've seen in the aftermath of a PS crash since Brogdon could be seen inside the car hanging from his belts. As always, the Safety Safari was on the scene in seconds and began to keep the fire from spreading and getting into the driver compartment.
They continued to step up the extinguising medium until the fire went out. Brogdon is out, talking, and alert. He's been released by the medical staff and is fine.
Checking the replay, the car started towards the centerline and actually crossed it at about 1000 feet. We're down for a cleanup.

(W) Jeg Coughlin (Jegs.com Cobalt) 0.043 6.669 207.46
(L) Erica Enders (Mustang) 0.016 6.767 186.121

2:36 p.m. and the debris has been removed.
Coughlin is 1 - 0 against Enders in prior events.
Enders welded Jeggie to the tree and led most of the way. It looked like her car nosed over and Coughlin went blazing by.
Jeg Coughlin's incremental times: 60ft-0.996 sec., 330ft-2.795, 660ft-4.296/163.89 mph, 1,000ft-5.584. Erica Enders' incremental times: 60ft-0.997 sec., 330ft-2.804, 660ft-4.311/162.82 mph, 1,000ft-5.611. 0

(W) Allen Johnson (Mopar/J & J Racing Avenger) 0.080 6.659 207.82
(L) Ronnie Humphrey (Pro Stock Grills/THM GXP) 0.145 6.711 207.05

Well, that was pretty interesting. We had a mini-burn down as neither driver was in a hurry to stage. After 15 or 20 seconds, Ronnie goes in.
What got wacky is that almost immediately the bulb went red on AJ's side. To me (and to anyone within earshot including Bob Frey) it sure didn't seem to be the full seven seconds.
We just saw a replay and it's definitely way short. We're told there's going to be a re-run.

12:51 p.m.
We've been informed that the problem with the tree was due to human error. We've finished PSM and brought these two back for the re-run. Johnson wins this one easily and we're finally finished with round 1.

Round 2

Sunday
Results for Elimination Round 2
MADISON, Ill. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 14th annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals:

W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

(W) Warren Johnson (K&N Filters GXP) 0.061 6.692 207.11
(L) Allen Johnson (Mopar/J & J Racing Avenger) 0.051 12.696 69.60

1:55 p.m. WJ got left on by just a touch, but AJ runs into problems before he gets to 330. It's another semifinal for the K&N car.

(W) Greg Stanfield (Nitrofish GXP) 0.032 6.655 207.34
(L) Justin Humphreys (RaceRedi Motorsports GXP) 0.011 6.701 206.07

Two very good lights, but Stanfield opens up the gap on the back half of the track. Greg Stanfield's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.002), 330 ft(0.001), 660ft(0.011), 1,000ft(0.019). MOV: 0.0251 seconds (approximately 8 feet).

(W) Jeg Coughlin (Jegs.com Cobalt) 0.028 6.632 207.66
(L) Greg Anderson (Summit Racing Equipment GXP) 0.040 6.635 208.62This was simply a very good drag race.

Coughlin left first and held the advantage all the way across the finish line. (W) Mike Edwards (Penhall/K&N/Interstae GXP) 0.044 6.631 208.30 (L) Johnny Gray (NTB GXP) 0.045 6.681 207.18Edwards runs low ET of the round, but Jeg was right there with him. They meet each other next round and that to be a race to remember.

Round 3

Sunday
Results for Elimination Round 3
MADISON, Ill. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 14th annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals:
W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

(W) Jeg Coughlin (Jegs.com Cobalt) 0.024 6.607 208.17
(L) Greg Stanfield (Nitrofish GXP) 0.020 6.634 207.40

3:22 p.m. The sky is totally covered in low clouds with not even the briefest sun coming through. Strangely enough, the air is getting just a touch drier which will help out these Pro Stock engines.
Coughln is 16 - 3 against Stanfield in prior events.
Stanfield left first and I thought for a moment he was going to pull this one off. In the other lane, though, Coughlin had other ideas and lays day a stunning pass.

(W) Warren Johnson (K&N Filters GXP) 0.224 6.668 207.56
(L) Mike Edwards (Penhall/K&N/Interstae GXP) -9.999(R)

NT-Broke Before StagingSpeaking of stunning, the trend continues. Edwards is sitting beneath the tower and can't get the car fired. The crew sprints back inside the tunnel and janks off the front end and scoop. Crew Chief Terry Adams works frantically on the left side of the carburetors for a couple of minutes but suddenly straightens up and gives the signal to the started that they won't be running. WJ takes a single into the finals. Weird.

Finals

Sunday
Results for Final Round
MADISON, Ill. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 14th annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals:

W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

(W) Warren Johnson (K&N Filters GXP) 0.072 6.670 207.75
(L) Jeg Coughlin (Jegs.com Cobalt) 0.155 NT-Broke After Staging

This is the final for a very strange race so far. It's got a lot to think about. Jeg has a chance to be the first in over 20 years to double up in a Pro/Sportman class. Warren hasn't been in a final since Atlanta in 2007.
Well, I suppose there's something to be said for consistency as Madison has officially changed into Weird City. Coughlin drops the clutch, the car just shudders and barely rolls out of the beams. At the other end, Warren is out of his car and the monitor shows him smiling. Even when it's your 97th win and first since Phoenix in 2006, sometimes it's just your day. Congratulations to WJ and the entire K&N crew.
