Round 2 Qualifying

Friday
Results for Qualifying Round 2
COMMERCE, Ga. - ATLANTA - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 30th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.762/205.26, Now #18 No Prior Run

6:22 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 86 degrees, relative humidity 53 percent, barometer 29.41 inches, adjusted altitude 3,225 feet, track temperature 112 degrees.

The track is cooling rapidly and it's just a bit cooler than first session, but since the humidity is rising there won't be much difference. Look for a hundredth here or there.

Nobile gets a straight, full pass this time around and now has something he can work from.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.659/207.88, Now #1 No Prior Run
Right Lane: Rodger Brogdon Runs 9.162/102.71, Now #23 Best prior run: 10.242/88.44, Was #22

These two very fast cars were very slow last session and they pay the price by having to run early this time around.

Brogdon still has some work to do as the car stands up and heads left. It wasn't so much the wheelstand as the car heading for the centerline that caused him to lift.

Jeg has it totally undercontrol. Not only does he get a good pass, he gets a great pass and goes directly to the head of the class.

Jeg Coughlin's incremental times: 60ft-0.993 sec., 330ft-2.789, 660ft-4.285/165.07 mph, 1,000ft-5.573.

Left Lane: Jimmy Alund Runs 6.771/204.23, Now #20 Best prior run: 7.591/130.05, Was #22
Right Lane: Danny Gruninger Runs 6.736/205.22, Now #18 Best prior run: 6.749/204.60, Was #18

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.641/208.07, Now #1 Best prior run: 7.099/152.45, Was #22
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.718/206.70, Now #14 Best prior run: 6.724/206.35, Was #15

Like Bob Frey is saying, how often do you see these two this early in a session?

Considering what they just watched Jeg do, it's going to be tough for the crew chiefs not to get greedy and go over center with their setups.

The Summit team is really paying a lot of attention to the car's placement on the line with a bunch of pushing, nudging, and jockeying before the car pulls up to stage.

Memo to Mike Edwards: the fact that you just ran like that with your BACKUP engine makes the rest of the class sick to their stomachs. Mike Edwards' incremental times: 60ft-0.984 sec., 330ft-2.775, 660ft-4.269/165.23 mph, 1,000ft-5.556.Jason Line's incremental times: 60ft-1.009 sec., 330ft-2.825, 660ft-4.332/164.41 mph, 1,000ft-5.627.

Left Lane: John Gaydosh Jr Runs 6.895/199.91, Now #22 Best prior run: 6.929/199.05, Was #22
Right Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.708/206.20, Now #11 Best prior run: 6.721/205.66, Was #15

Erica gets right back in the field, and Gaydosh's very low MPH makes you wonder if he's running a wounded piece.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.776/202.06, Now #18 Best prior run: 6.729/204.73, Was #18
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.672/206.32, Now #3 Best prior run: 6.717/205.38, Was #14

Ronnie Humphrey is on the bump spot at 6.708. Spiess has been showing flashes of having some really good power, and this pass will make even more believers. According to my records it's third quickest of the round so far.

Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.659/206.73, Now #3 Best prior run: 6.725/205.41, Was #17
Right Lane: Shane Gray Runs 6.672/206.70, Now #4 Best prior run: 6.707/205.44, Was #11

Both of these cars can be very quick. I'm still firm in my belief that Nitrofish car is the most underrated on the circuit.

And Greg makes me look like I might know something as he blasts to the third spot - but don't miss the fact that Gray was right there with him.

Greg Stanfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.972 sec., 330ft-2.769, 660ft-4.271/164.25 mph, 1,000ft-5.567.

Shane Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.984 sec., 330ft-2.784, 660ft-4.286/164.47 mph, 1,000ft-5.580.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.669/206.64, Now #4 Best prior run: 6.723/205.72, Was #17
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.735/206.42, Now #13 Best prior run: 6.707/206.73, Was #12

At one time, this would have been the pair deciding who was going to be top qualifier. While those days are past, I'm not convinced they're gone forever.

Warren's car was straight as a string off the line, not dancing around like it has often done lately. I can say this with some assurance since I had a fair amount of time to watch it - it just wasn't going anywhere off the starting line for a Pro Stock car. It was very smooth and very slow.

KJ looks a whole bunch better and cards his best pass in a while.

Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.988 sec., 330ft-2.786, 660ft-4.286/164.29 mph, 1,000ft-5.579.
Warren Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.001 sec., 330ft-2.828, 660ft-4.343/163.69 mph, 1,000ft-5.641.

Left Lane: Rickie Jones Runs 6.686/206.16, Now #11 Best prior run: 6.709/205.51, Was #16
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.682/206.45, Now #9 Best prior run: 6.703/205.91, Was #11

Left Lane: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 6.708/206.39, Now #15 Best prior run: 6.708/205.85, Was #16
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.667/207.08, Now #4 Best prior run: 6.695/206.67, Was #12

Greg Anderson is on the bump spot at 6.695. Ronnie Humphrey's incremental times: 60ft-1.008 sec., 330ft-2.817, 660ft-4.320/164.05 mph, 1,000ft-5.615.

Left Lane: Bob Yonke Runs 6.694/206.39, Now #13 Best prior run: 6.706/205.51, Was #13
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 6.652/207.34, Now #2 Best prior run: 6.676/206.73, Was #9

Anderson's pass put Rickie Jones on the bump spot at 6.686. Gray definitely has something going on this weekend. That's a very fast car and when you're also consistent you win races. Yonke continues to impress if only because he sure runs like he's done this for years instead of being a rookie. He's making an almost impossible class look easy.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.659/207.08, Now #5 Best prior run: 6.684/206.32, Was #11
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.634/208.23, Now #1 Best prior run: 6.674/207.46, Was #9

Our final pair should show us how good some of those earlier runs really were.

The Mopar just hammers all the way to the finish line. He was laying down some serious numbers from one end of the track to the other and is solidly on top. Krisher picks up a couple of hundredths and steps up to mid pack.

Congratulations to the Johnsons and especially to Crew Chief Mark Ingersoll.

Round 1 Eliminations

Sunday
Results for Elimination Round 1
COMMERCE, Ga. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 30th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals:

W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

(W) Kurt Johnson (Mark Christopher Cobalt) 0.096 6.705 206.32
(L) Shane Gray (Tire Kingdom GXP) 0.106 6.696 206.48

12:15 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 87 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 29.32 inches, adjusted altitude 3,464 feet, track temperature 117 degrees.

We begin with the Pro Stock cars in weather pretty much like we've had all weekend. The sky is a bit more broken clouds today instead of full overcast, so there's more of a heat load on the track than we've seen.
Gray is the 83rd different driver Kurt Johnson has faced.
Neither driver knocks the tree down but KJ does a slightly better job and takes a very close holeshot win. Kurt Johnson's MOV: 0.0012 seconds (approximately 4 inches). Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.995 sec., 330ft-2.809, 660ft-4.314/163.67 mph, 1,000ft-5.611.
Shane Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.997 sec., 330ft-2.802, 660ft-4.308/164.43 mph, 1,000ft-5.604.

(W) Greg Anderson (Summit Racing Equipment GXP) 0.043 6.662 206.67 (L) Steve Spiess (Billet Specialties Cobalt) 0.053 6.700 205.91

Anderson is learning to race from the middle of the pack, though I'm sure he'd much rather go back to his old ways and not have to race so early in the session.
Anderson does a better job in every way including his best ET of the weekend.
Greg Anderson's incremental times: 60ft-0.980 sec., 330ft-2.778, 660ft-4.277/164.65 mph, 1,000ft-5.571.
Steve Spiess' incremental times: 60ft-0.996 sec., 330ft-2.802, 660ft-4.308/164.35 mph, 1,000ft-5.606.

(W) Greg Stanfield (Nitrofish GXP) 0.001 6.679 206.23
(L) Jason Line (Summit Racing Equipment GXP) 0.053 6.722 204.79

Line's car rolls through the water without a burnout. It won't back up so his crew races to push him back. No good on the burnout so they push back again. Finally, he gets a burnout and quickly stages.
I've been talking up Stanfield for a few races and he does me proud here with a stellar light.

(W) Jeg Coughlin (Jegs.com Cobalt) 0.030 6.656 207.43
(L) Ronnie Humphrey (Pro Stock Grills/THM GXP) 0.033 6.757 205.54

Humphrey misses the setup and is way off in performance. It may not have mattered as Jeggie is flying in the other lane.
Jeg Coughlin's incremental times: 60ft-0.992 sec., 330ft-2.785, 660ft-4.281/164.83 mph, 1,000ft-5.569.

Ronnie Humphrey's incremental times: 60ft-1.028 sec., 330ft-2.851, 660ft-4.360/163.89 mph, 1,000ft-5.660.

(W) Johnny Gray (NTB GXP) 0.055 6.682 206.73
(L) Bob Yonke (Adrenaline Motorsports GXP) 0.057 6.696 206.13

Gray is the first racer with lane choice to take the right lane.
These cars left together and were door to door until downtrack where Gray pulls away.

(W) Rickie Jones (Elite GXP) 0.001 6.698 205.85
(L) Mike Edwards (Penhall/K&N/Interstae GXP) 0.078 6.641 208.23

With the way the team has been running, not many of the Pro Stock teams are very happy with having to run Mike Edwards. But Rickie Jones is not one to worry about that #1 on the window since he has three round wins against Edwards this year. That's the most for any driver this year.
Rickie has reason not to be scared as he kills the tree and takes out Edwards with a stunning hole shot. He wins by about 6 feet.

(W) Allen Johnson (Mopar/J & J Racing Avenger) 0.049 6.644 208.04
(L) Warren Johnson (K&N Filters GXP) 0.067 6.719 205.91

Johnson is looking to continue the momentum from being low qualifier. He's never lost in first round when he's started in the #1 spot. Warren has attended and qualified for all 30 of the races here at Commerce. This is the 7th time he's qualified in the 16th position and the second time this year. That's the first time he's ever had more than one start from the bump spot in a year.
AJ takes care of that momentum thing as the Tennessee guys have some real steam these days and beats Warren by a bunch.

(W) V. Gaines (Kendall Oil Avenger) 0.083 6.685 206.10
(L) Ron Krisher (Valvoline Cobalt) 0.127 6.676 206.80

Ron Krisher has 15 starts here while Gaines is making his 14th. Neither of these guys are a spring chicken, but V acts like a teenager and puts .04 on Krisher off the line. He parlays that into a clear victory.

Round 2 Results

Sunday
Results for Elimination Round 2
COMMERCE, Ga. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 30th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals:

W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

(W) Johnny Gray (NTB GXP) 0.037 6.672 206.70
(L) Greg Stanfield (Nitrofish GXP) 0.023 6.694 205.82

1:29 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 88 degrees, relative humidity 51 percent, barometer 29.28 inches, adjusted altitude 3,478 feet, track temperature 116 degrees.

That was a really good drag race and Gray is going to the semifinals. He's on the top end explaining that the team made 25 test passes since St. Louis. It's working.
Johnny Gray's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.016), 330 ft(-0.013), 660ft(-0.007), 1,000ft(0.001). MOV: 0.0088 seconds (approximately 3 feet).
Greg Stanfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.993 sec., 330ft-2.794, 660ft-4.299/163.85 mph, 1,000ft-5.598.
Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.995 sec., 330ft-2.793, 660ft-4.292/165.38 mph, 1,000ft-5.583.

(W) Rickie Jones (Elite GXP) 0.025 6.690 205.47
(L) Greg Anderson (Summit Racing Equipment GXP) 0.048 6.669 206.39

Like Bob Frey said in his column on Drag Race Central, don't call it HotLanta. I'd suggest Hole Shot City at this point as that Jones kid takes out another titan and will meet Gray in the semifinals
Rickie Jones' MOV: 0.0028 seconds (approximately 10 inches).
Greg Anderson's incremental times: 60ft-0.987 sec., 330ft-2.782, 660ft-4.282/164.21 mph, 1,000ft-5.576.
Rickie Jones' incremental times: 60ft-0.977 sec., 330ft-2.787, 660ft-4.296/164.11 mph, 1,000ft-5.594.

(W) Jeg Coughlin (Jegs.com Cobalt) 0.041 6.662 207.40
(L) V. Gaines (Kendall Oil Avenger) 0.082 6.693 206.13

If I'm up against Jeg Coughlin, I'm not going to feel good about my chances when he leaves first. Gaines probably was thinking something like that as he followed the yellow Cobalt the entire length of the track.

(W) Allen Johnson (Mopar/J & J Racing Avenger) 0.034 6.660 207.94
(L) Kurt Johnson (Mark Christopher Cobalt) 0.050 6.690 206.10

Pro Stock is all about horsepower and Allen Johnson is happy he has a bunch as he drives away from Kurt.
Allen Johnson's incremental margins: 60ft(0.016), 330 ft(0.019), 660ft(0.028), 1,000ft(0.037). MOV: 0.0469 seconds (approximately 14 feet).
Allen Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.999 sec., 330ft-2.795, 660ft-4.289/165.36 mph, 1,000ft-5.576.
Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.999 sec., 330ft-2.798, 660ft-4.301/164.49 mph, 1,000ft-5.597. We're flying through the pairs here trying to dodge weather. Hurry back!

(L) Johnny Gray (NTB GXP) 0.426 7.477 139.75

2:41 p.m.
Weather conditions: air temperature 86 degrees, relative humidity 48 percent, barometer 29.26 inches, adjusted altitude 3,323 feet, track temperature 118 degrees.

The big question at this point is if Rickie has one more holeshot left in him. Gray's been running so well lately I'm not sure that Jones could take him on an even start.
Did I talk about Hole Shot City? This is way beyond a hole shot, there had to have been a mechanical problem somehow.
Rickie's got a birthday coming up and he's already beat Mike Edwards and raced his way into his first final. Not too shabby.

(W) Jeg Coughlin (Jegs.com Cobalt) 0.033 6.657 207.50
(L) Allen Johnson (Mopar/J & J Racing Avenger) 0.044 6.655 206.67

Wait for it ---- another holeshot.
Jeg Coughlin's MOV: 0.0095 seconds (approximately 3 feet). Allen Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.987 sec., 330ft-2.777, 660ft-4.273/164.87 mph, 1,000ft-5.564.
Jeg Coughlin's incremental times: 60ft-0.999 sec., 330ft-2.789, 660ft-4.282/165.66 mph, 1,000ft-5.570.

Results for Final Round
COMMERCE, Ga. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 30th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals:

W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

(W) Jeg Coughlin (Jegs.com Cobalt) 0.024 6.659 207.21
(L) Rickie Jones (Elite GXP) 0.029 6.686 206.35

The ruler of reaction times now has to face the young upstart who wants that same title. Jones turns 23 tomorrow and is still adding to his birthday package.
They leave pretty much together and Jones never seriously challenges.
Weather conditions: air temperature 88 degrees, relative humidity 47 percent, barometer 29.23 inches, adjusted altitude 3,499 feet, track temperature 116 degrees.

Even with the loss, Jones' exceptional work this weekend put him into the top ten.
But once again, Jeg serves notice that it's going to take more than a couple of flashy rounds for him to give up his position. It's his 50th victory in Pro Stockp and that's an exceptional number for such a relatively short career.
Jeg Coughlin's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.010), 330 ft(0.004), 660ft(0.017), 1,000ft(0.026). MOV: 0.0321 seconds (approximately 10 feet).
Jeg Coughlin's incremental times: 60ft-0.995 sec., 330ft-2.789, 660ft-4.284/164.93 mph, 1,000ft-5.572.
Rickie Jones' incremental times: 60ft-0.980 sec., 330ft-2.788, 660ft-4.296/164.11 mph, 1,000ft-5.593.

Jeggie again proves how great a driver he is... Not the fastest car but the winner anyway!!!!!!
