Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan
BRAINERD, Minn. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 30th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 7.356/92.87, Now #1
3:23 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 43 percent, barometer 28.64 inches, adjusted altitude 3,062 feet.
We are sitting atop the left-side bleachers here and cannot see the track temperature sign, but the track should not be a problem because we have hd light cloud cover for the past couple hours.
Creasy had a clean launch, with a 0.923 60-foot time, but began to rattle and then smoke the tires about 100 feet out.
Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 5.507/131.01, Now #2
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 5.148/161.02, Now #1
Both cars made clean launches and both appeared to be on pretty good runs, then both lost traction about 300 feet out.
Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.150/150.41, Now #2
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 6.266/105.38, Now #4
Pretty much the same story, Lee out of the throttle after losing traction about 300 feet out, Head getting a little further before suffering the same fate.
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.112/149.46, Now #1
Right Lane: Johnny Gray No Time, Now #7
Gray's car flamed out at the end of his burnout. He got out and over the wall so Pedregon could run. Pedregon made a solid run to about 400 feet, then the rear tires started spinning and he shut it off.
Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.192/295.21, Now #1
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.056/152.24, Now #2
Wilkerson also got about 400 feet before having problems, but Tasca appeared to be under power all the way through, with no major problems, giving us our first "four" of the weekend.
Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.122/146.70, Now #5
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.581/231.79, Now #2
These two made their burnouts, pulled up to stage...and no stage lights. Apparently the vibration of the fuel cars shook a connector loose on the tree.
The crews shut off the fuel supplies and Arend's engine shut down quickly, but Force's kept surging, almost stopping, then revving up again. It finally ran out of fuel and the teams had to figure out whether to 'fuel and refire," or reservice the engines.
Both elected to add some fuel, back the engines off, and try again.
Both cars fired up with no problems and the drivers moved in to stage again. Like many before them, both lost traction about 400 feet out. Arend shut off, but Force got out of the throttle, then got back on, trying to get a bonus point or two. At the least, he will get to run later in the second session.
Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.150/293.66, Now #1
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.599/183.49, Now #4
Tim Richards has it figured out, Capps' car went through the problem area with no visible problems. Hagan was not as fortunate, he joined the growing list of those losing traction about 400 feet out.
Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.242/272.67, Now #3
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.845/176.63, Now #6
pedregon bumped Force from the final bonus points position with a good run, with an early shutoff. Beckman started hazing the tries about 400 feet out (where have we heard that before?).
Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 7.305/88.86, Now #15
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.885/167.20, Now #7
Last pair. They need to beat Capps' 4.150 for #1, Cruz Pedregon's 4.242 for a bonus point.
Nope. Hight lost traction about 200 feet out, Neff lost traction about 400 feet out.
After one session, only Capps and Tasca came close to making full passes.

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan
BRAINERD, Minn. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 30th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.166/301.07, Now #2; No Prior Run
6:04 p.m. Jim Head is on the bump spot at 5.150.
Let's hope the crew chiefs got things figured out and the cars can get past 400 feet without smoking the tires.
Well, at least Gray's crew chief did his homework correctly - this was a pretty pass. No records, but clean and straight with no visible problems.
Left Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 4.236/290.26, Now #5; Best prior run: 7.356/92.87, Was #17
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.152/303.30, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.305/88.86, Was #16
Two more full passes and the field shuffles once again. Now Tony Pedregon is on the bump spot at 5.112.
Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.335/272.56, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.266/105.38, Was #17
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 7.247/95.78, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.507/131.01, Was #16
Bode was up in smoke before 200 feet, but Lee went right down the groove on yet another full pass. Now Tim Wilkerson is on the bump spot at 5.056.
Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.183/300.73, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.148/161.02, Was #15
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 7.259/84.34, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.150/150.41, Was #16
Head got about 200 feet, then lost traction and shut it off. Troxel made a nice, full pass. Now Mike Neff is on the bump spot at 4.885.
Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.156/300.80, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.056/152.24, Was #13
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.549/130.61, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.122/146.70, Was #15
The list of cars with a shot at getting into the field is getting shorter, but tese two are definitely on it. Mike Neff and Tony Pedregon, right behind them, also have a shot.
Arend's car was too aggressive early in the run, hiking the front end up, then smoking the tires when the wheelie bar hit the track. Wilkerson was a little softer at the start and sailed right down the groove and into the top part of the field.
Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 5.105/150.83, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.885/167.20, Was #13
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.571/273.33, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.112/149.46, Was #14
If these two get in, the bumping will continue.
Neff rattled the tires and lifted, Pedregon rattled the tires and did a nice job of pedaling to save the run. He got in, Neff will start over tomorrow.
Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.186/292.77, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.845/176.63, Was #13
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 6.808/103.06, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.242/272.67, Was #8
Beckman is on the outside, Pedregon is safely in the field, and Matt Hagan is on the bump spot at 4.599.
Beckman made a nice, straight run to get into the field, bumping Hagan. Pedregon lost traction about 200 feet out, lost a spot.
Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.101/303.57, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.599/183.49, Was #13
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.149/299.00, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.192/295.21, Was #7
Hagan was on the outside, John Force was on the bunp spot at 4.581, and Tasca was safely in the field, with just Force and Ron Capps (still #1) left in the staging lanes.
Nice pair of runs and these two moved to the top of the list, with Hagan now #1. That bumped Force from the provisional field, with Tony pedregon on the bump spot at 4.571.
Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.890/161.44, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.581/231.79, Was #13
Right Lane: Ron Capps No Time, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.150/293.66, Was #3
Capps made the burnout, backed up, and the chute popped out. The crew frantically tried to repack it, but Force was ready to go and the starter signaled him to stage the car, shutting Capps off.
Force started rattling the tires around 300 feet out and was unable to save the run, so he's going to have to try again tomorrow.

Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.242/291.95, Now #10; No Prior Run
12:33 p.m. Unless there was a car hiding in the pits that did not run yesterday, one driver will come out on the short end this weekend, 17 cars trying to qualify for a 16-car field.
Neff had a couple of weak cylinders on this run - they dropped and then came back - but it got the job done.
Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.149/294.24, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.150/293.66, Was #3
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.409/255.10, Now #13; No Prior Run
Capps is qualified way up in the field, but his chute popped out and he did not run in the second session yesterday, so he ends up running early in this session. Force got here the hard way, he was 13th in a 12-car provisional field yesterday.
Both cars got down the track, but Capps' car was making "strange flames" and trailing smoke in the shutdown area and Force's car was more than a tenth behind Capps at the 660-foot marker, falling back rapidly at the stripe.
Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 5.284/139.18, Now #15; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 7.782/86.48, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.236/290.26, Was #9

Two good runs, but not as good as their runs yesterday.
Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.678/245.76, Now #16; No Prior Run
Head came up earlier, with Paul Lee in the other lane, and did his burnout. Lee got to the end of his burnout and he tried several times to get it into reverse, then tried to drive it off the top end to clear the track for Head. The engine finall perked up as he crossed the finish line, but the chutes came out wand the fuel shut off hen the automatic system deployed his chutes and he stopped on the track. Head sat behind the starting line a long time, finally had to shut the engine off.

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan
BRAINERD, Minn. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 30th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals
listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Runs 7.782/86.48, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.236/290.26, Was #9
Creasy got very sideways and had to shut off. Bode shut off on the top end.
Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.216/288.89, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.242/272.67, Was #11
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.189/298.54, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.186/292.77, Was #8
Two pretty good runs, but Pedregon's car was trailing a little smoke in the lights.
Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.248/294.86, Now #12; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.182/304.74, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.183/300.73, Was #7

Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.336/277.09, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.166/301.07, Was #6
Pedregon smoked the tires right off the line. Gray made an almost-full pass.

Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.740/174.26, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.156/300.80, Was #5
Hight was also up in smoke early in the run. Wilkerson got further, then also lost traction.

Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.224/272.50, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.101/303.57, Was #1
Two good runs, but not as good as their runs yesterday.
