KENT, Wash. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 23rd annual NHRA Northwest Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Grant Downing Runs 4.708/198.38, Now #1

2:32 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 90 degrees, relative humidity 34 percent, barometer 29.62 inches, adjusted altitude 3,036 feet, track temperature 129 degrees.

This will be Downing first National Event of the year. Based on the pre-entry car count we will have a bump spot before tomorrow evening, maybe this session. The track is getting hotter and this being the first session, most of the teams will be tip-toeing down the track.

Downing's car was a little soft off the line and then the engines goes way sour. He continues to flog it down track and it finally gives up near the 1000 foot lights.

...and we are down for oil. Looks like a Big Bagger to boot.

Left Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 4.736/260.46, Now #3
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.428/258.22, Now #1

2:51 p.m. Well, that took a while.

This is Thiel's first attempt to qualify in 2010 and we haven't seen The Teacher's Pet FC on the tour since earlier this year.

Thiel is off the throttle early and Densham gets to near the 1000 foot lights before the engine expires. Not too good, but no Stuff on the track.

Brian Thiel's incremental times: 60ft-1.016 sec., 330ft-2.624, 660ft-3.791/218.94 mph.
Gary Densham's incremental times: 60ft-0.923 sec., 330ft-2.423, 660ft-3.490/229.66 mph.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.468/215.72, Now #2
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.470/223.69, Now #3

Arend gets off the line first and pulls away until near the top end , where the Solara starts to move around on the track.

Pedregon chases him with a little better numbers until right at the 660 lights where it looked like a lot of smoke from the pipes. He keeps it going to stay in front in the lights.

Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.918 sec., 330ft-2.377, 660ft-3.446/227.15 mph.
Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.927 sec., 330ft-2.406, 660ft-3.479/232.47 mph.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 6.006/111.18, Now #7
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 5.195/145.64, Now #6

Two take the green, get sa ways down track and then give it up with some shake, smoke and dropped cylinders.

Left Lane: Ron Capps No Time, Now #9
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.312/279.90, Now #1

Capps fires and falls back, as the car makes a hard move near the 330 lights and nails the 330 reflector and stops on the track. That will DQ his run.

Wilkerson gets a full pass into the #1 spot and almost joins Capps on the DQ list, as the Mustang drifts over to the centerline and just misses the reflector.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.925 sec., 330ft-2.401, 660ft-3.447/243.81 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.644/212.76, Now #6
Right Lane: Ashley Force Hood Runs 4.272/281.30, Now #1

Both cars leave hard with Tasca getting the initial advantage down low. He has to work the pedal after the 330 lights and then clicks it early to coast on down.

Force Hood has a hot weather, hot track tune up and marches to the finish line and into the new top spot.

Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.374, 660ft-3.566/197.59 mph.
Ashley Force Hood's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.382, 660ft-3.417/247.66 mph.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 6.181/105.67, Now #12
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.371/275.79, Now #3

Two DSR FC's to the line.

The right lane continues to be the quick and fast choice, as Hagan makes it all the way down the track without any drama. Nice pass.

Beckman had the best sixty foot time of the session, but the track couldn't hold it, as the slicks are up in smoke by the 330 lights.

Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.900 sec., 330ft-2.435, 660ft-4.131/124.91 mph.
Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.932 sec., 330ft-2.426, 660ft-3.489/239.40 mph.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.325/245.40, Now #3
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.435/250.18, Now #6

Team Force this time.

The Prock Rocket has the magic for the tough left lane and gets down the track on a safe pass into the new #3 position.

Force's Mustang had a softer tune up and chases the 2009 Champion down the track into the top half of the field.

Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.903 sec., 330ft-2.368, 660ft-3.406/243.68 mph.
John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.405, 660ft-3.477/034.82 mph.

3:22 p.m. Ashley Force Hood is the number one qualifier at 4.272 and Del Worsham is on the bump spot at 5.195.

KENT, Wash. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 23rd annual NHRA Northwest Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.321/277.66, Now #3; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.321/277.32, Now #4; No Prior Run

5:21 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 92 degrees, relative humidity 29 percent, barometer 29.59 inches, adjusted altitude 3,105 feet, track temperature 127 degrees.

It's a little hotter, but the track is cooling a little, as the sun is starting to go down.

It's reported that Capps' crossing the center line after shaking the tires was caused by a failure in the steering system. Scary! Luckily near the starting line, not in the lights.

What a great pair of runs to start the session, both cars run identical ET and almost the same MPH on a side by side pass. Only 0.002 difference in RT.

Lee gets the #3 position with the better MPH, as Capps' blower bangs in the lights.

Paul Lee's incremental times: 60ft-0.914 sec., 330ft-2.412, 660ft-3.454/244.87 mph.
Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.918 sec., 330ft-2.380, 660ft-3.443/238.22 mph.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.315/282.72, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.195/145.64, Was #14
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.275/284.03, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.181/105.67, Was #16

Grant Downing is on the bump spot at 4.708, but doesn't stay there for long. Two more clean and straight passes and two more cars improve into the top four positions.

Nice!

Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.918 sec., 330ft-2.404, 660ft-3.455/243.06 mph.
Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.917 sec., 330ft-2.388, 660ft-3.423/246.84 mph.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.276/284.39, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.470/223.69, Was #12
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.331/254.90, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.006/111.18, Was #16

Jeff Arend is on the bump spot at 4.470 and looking to move away quickly. Pedregon needs a full pass to move into the quickly improving field.

Pedregon gets off the line much better this time and then has the Impala drift out of the groove and towards the wall. He herds it back towards the middle and takes the new #9 position.

Arend shows his improved performance again and makes another smart looking pass to jump way up the ladder into the #3 position.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.269/285.35, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.435/250.18, Was #12
Right Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 4.640/263.20, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.736/260.46, Was #16

John Force is on the bump spot at 4.435.

WOW! Thiel's tow car and race car went flying by our little window on the outside world at about 20-25 MPH towards the front of the line. Team Force waited patiently for them to get the car ready and started.

Looks like waiting didn't hurt, as Zippy made the necessary tune up changes to power the Mustang quickly into the new #1 position on a straight and clean pass.

Thiel gets a season best ET and MPH to move him within striking distance of the bump spot in the current #14 position. They now have some numbers to tune to tomorrow.

John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.901 sec., 330ft-2.380, 660ft-3.419/247.25 mph.
Brian Thiel's incremental times: 60ft-1.009 sec., 330ft-2.578, 660ft-3.710/224.51 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.791/168.68, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.371/275.79, Was #11
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.257/285.29, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.644/212.76, Was #15

Gary Densham is on the bump spot at 4.428 and will not run this session.

It's Ford power again, as Tasca makes a straight and true pass into the new number one position.

Hagan's Charger had better incrementals until just before mid-track, when the tires started to smoke. It got a lot worse quickly, as there is terminal engine damage after that and the cleanup crew has to go to work with some major dusting and cleaning.

Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.900 sec., 330ft-2.352, 660ft-3.495/194.97 mph.
Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.923 sec., 330ft-2.377, 660ft-3.409/248.29 mph.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.277/287.23, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.312/279.90, Was #6
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.341/226.39, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.468/215.72, Was #14

5:51 p.m. Back to racing. Matt Hagan is on the bump spot at 4.371 and Pedregon is the last car able to bump him out for today.

The track temperature is down to 118 degrees already.

Both cars get to the finish line under power, but Pedregon's Solara starts to spin the slicks near the 800 feet mark. Good enough to move him on to the bump spot.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.920 sec., 330ft-2.398, 660ft-3.429/247.29 mph.
Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.914 sec., 330ft-2.345, 660ft-3.366/243.50 mph.

Left Lane: Ashley Force Hood Runs 4.225/287.23, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.272/281.30, Was #3
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.194/291.57, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.325/245.40, Was #10

Force started the session in number one, but now sits at #3.

WOW! Take no prisoners! Force Hood is first off the line and stays there until near the three thirty lights with better incrementals. After that, its all Hight, all the time. The AAA Mustang moves he bar up a ton with our first four "teen" and 290 plus MPH. Take nails the number one spot for tonight and will be tough to beat tomorrow.

That puts Fords in one, two, three, four, and seven on today's final ladder.

Ashley Force Hood's incremental times: 60ft-0.890 sec., 330ft-2.351, 660ft-3.381/249.95 mph.
Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.908 sec., 330ft-2.348, 660ft-3.363/252.10 mph.

Funny Car Round 1 Eliminations
By David Gerard

KENT, Wash. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 23rd annual NHRA Northwest Nationals:

Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed

2 Ashley Force Hood (W).........vs......782 Gary Densham
0.107 4.128 301.60 .................0.156 6.923 105.46

11:24 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 70 percent, barometer 29.65 inches, adjusted altitude 1,696 feet, track temperature 87 degrees.

Force Hood is 5 - 1 against Densham in prior events. Densham won here in 2005.
Force Hood is first off the line and marches down the track to improve on her best qualifying time by almost a tenth. All eight firing in the lights. I believe that is our first 300 plus run of the weekend.
Densham was game, but struck the tires before the 330 lights.
Ashley Force Hood's incremental margins: 60ft(0.060), 330 ft(0.398), 660ft(1.464). MOV: 2.8442 seconds (more than 100 feet).

Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed

6 Tony Pedregon ........vs.........71 Cruz Pedregon (W)
0.072 5.078 206.54................ 0.077 5.053 203.52

Tony P. won here in 2002. He has a career win ratio of 26/12 over brother, Cruz and is 10/1 in first round match ups. Cruz P. was the runner up here twice, in 1993 and 1994.

Pedal Fest!
They leave almost together and then strike the tires almost together. There is a lot of pedal slapping after that and they go back and forth into the lead struggling down the track. Cruz gets more to the ground near the 1000 foot lights and just gets by for the narrow win. Neat!
Cruz Pedregon's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(0.005), 330 ft(-0.012), 660ft(-0.069). MOV: 0.0204 seconds (approximately 6 feet).
Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.939 sec., 330ft-2.495, 660ft-3.854/171.49 mph.
Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.929 sec., 330ft-2.502, 660ft-3.918/180.40 mph.

Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed

7 Del Worsham (W)........vs........717 Brian Thiel
0.096 4.133 304.12 ..............0.105 7.505 87.24

This is the first time Worsham and Thiel have faced each other in eliminations. Worsham won here in 1999.

Thiel team gets real busy under the body after the burn out, but gets it to the line on time.
It's Worsham's race from start to finish with a new top speed in Funny Car to boot. Great clean and straight run.
Any chance that Thiel had ended quickly, as the tires were up in smoke before the 330 lights.
Del Worsham's incremental margins: 60ft(0.088), 330 ft(0.404), 660ft(1.573). MOV: 3.3818 seconds (more than 100 feet).
Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.907 sec., 330ft-2.351, 660ft-3.332/261.27 mph.
Brian Thiel's incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.746, 660ft-4.896/097.66 mph.

Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
1 Robert Hight (W)........vs..........719 Jeff Diehl
0.047 5.013 155.69 ..............-0.240 9.065 76.74

This is Hight's thirty-eighth time to qualify #1 and the fifth time this year. He has five wins to date in 2010. Hight is 1 - 0 against Diehl in prior events.

Number one qualifier, Hight, ducks a bullet, when Diehl goes red by -0.240. The Mustang carded a strong 0.898 sixtyfoot time and then struck the tires. Hight pedaled it and struggled the car to the finish line. So much for lane choice.

Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed

28 Ron Capps (W)............vs.......116 Paul Lee
0.120 4.098 303.57 ...............0.084 4.236 299.40

Capps won his first National Event here in Top Fuel in 1995. He won Funny Car here in 1998 and has been the runner up three other times. This is the first time Capps and Lee have faced each other in eliminations.

Capps resets the best ET of the weekend on a strong pass down the track on a picture perfect pass.
Lee was game and got off the line well ahead of Capps, but was quickly passed before the sixty foot lights.
Capps will have lane choice over Force Hood in round two.
Ron Capps' incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(0.028), 330 ft(0.070), 660ft(0.090). MOV: 0.1021 seconds (approximately 45 feet).
Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.887 sec., 330ft-2.308, 660ft-3.296/260.46 mph.
Paul Lee's incremental times: 60ft-0.951 sec., 330ft-2.414, 660ft-3.422/256.50 mph.

Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed

8 Bob Tasca III ........vs...............4 Tim Wilkerson (W)
0.103 4.219 293.66 ....................... 0.069 4.150 302.82

Wilkerson is the defending 2009 Funny Car Race Champion. Wilkerson is 8 - 3 against Tasca III in prior events.

Wilkerson is the first car to get down the tough right lane and he does so with style. He gets off the line first and is never headed.
Tasca improves on his qualifying times, but is no match for "The Other Ford".

Hagan is 7 - 1 against Arend in prior events.

The right lane is dominate again, as Arend goes up in smoke about 500 feet out. Hagan was long gone by that point and finally gets the full run he wanted in qualifying
Worsham will have lane choice in round 2.

9 John Force .............vs.......5 Jack Beckman (W)
0.048 No Time ....................... 0.054 7.267 82.46

Beckman is 11 - 6 against Force in prior events. Force is the first Funny Car to clinch a spot in the Countdown to 1. Beckman has seven career wins and won here in 2007.

After staging dual, Beckman gets off the line first and then has the slicks start to spin. He tries to pump it to no avail and then coasts on down.
Force must have thought he had it in the bag until his Mustang started to smoke and spin the tires before half track. Thinking Beckman was still chasing him down, he pumped the throttle several times with the car swerving across the track and over the center line before the 1000 foot lights.
Hight will have lane choice in the next round.
John Force's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.018), 330 ft(0.191), 660ft(0.979). MOV: 2.3137 seconds (more than 100 feet).

1:13 p.m. Back to racing. The track temperature is now over 100 degrees, as the sun has started to peak through the overcast.
Another great race, as Hagan is out first and stays there right to the finish line. Worsham is right there, but can't match his prior numbers
