Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan
JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 13th annual United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by Miller Welders listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Jack Wyatt Runs 8.439/81.93, Now #2
Right Lane: Daniel Wilkerson Runs 4.564/203.89, Now #1
9:59 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 71 percent, barometer 29.01 inches, adjusted altitude 3,277 feet.
This is the first NHRA outing for these two this season - Wyatt from Iowa and Wilkerson from Illinois. It's also our first whiff of nitro today since the Top Alcohol Dragster session was postponed until after the Professional session.
Wyatt rattled the tires and headed for the wall, then clicked it off. Wilkerson ran okay to 660 feet, then slowed - perhaps a planned short shakedown pass.
Left Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. No Time, Now #4
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.938/248.48, Now #2
The clutch must have locked up on Wyatt's car, it took a long time to get his car off the top end so these two could fire their engines.
Both shook, both headed for the centerline, then they pedaled in almost perfect synchronization. Bode got it back to the groove, but Creasy's car kicked the rear end out and crossed the centerline, taking out the 330-foot marker.
Left Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.711/253.23, Now #2
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 5.428/136.65, Now #4
Both cars were dancing around. Lee pedaled once, then shut off. Diehl pedaled once, then continued.
Then came the call, "Stuff on the race track." Looks like they are working in both lanes in the shutdown area.
Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 8.114/90.21, Now #6
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.681/244.47, Now #2
10:23 p.m. Back to racing...that's always more fun than watching the Safety Safari do their cleanup thing.
Both cars shook. Pedregon pedaled and shut off. Arend pedaled and finished the run, but he hurt it, with a flash of flame as he crossed the stripe. The flash went away almost immediately and he almost made it off the track without assistance.
Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 5.803/150.66, Now #7
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.813/172.87, Now #4
So far, almost every driver has had to pedal quickly after leaving the starting line and the times have been unspectacular.
Same thing here, but both kept pedaling, the header flames up and down several times in both lanes. Worsham pedaled at least six times, wilkerson maybe only five.
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.774/254.90, Now #5
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.552/194.94, Now #1
So far, it's been "track 10, drivers 0."
Tasca solved the problem, getting through the short zone without pedaling, but his header flames went out well before the stripe. Pedregon did one of the better jobs of pedaling early in the run and had all eight lit as he crossed the stripe.
Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.142/304.53, Now #1
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.151/297.29, Now #2
That was pretty, the Team Schumacher cars putting on a nice side-by-side show with team leader Don Schumacher carefully straddling the centerline to watch them run.
Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.907 sec., 330ft-2.355, 660ft-3.341/260.46 mph.
Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.895 sec., 330ft-2.336, 660ft-3.333/256.45 mph.
Left Lane: Ashley Force Hood Runs 5.932/119.27, Now #13
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.456/294.37, Now #3
Both cars rattled the tires early in the run. Force Hood shut it off, ending up outside the provisional field. Meanwhile, Capps did a nice job of pedaling to save the run, posting the third-best time of the event, right behind his teammates.
Del Worsham is on the bump spot at 5.803.
Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.067/313.15, Now #1
Right Lane: John Force Runs 5.182/151.68, Now #12
Last pair. Force joined the pedaling crowd, finally clicking it off, but Hight just crushed the rest of the field with a picture-perfect run, right down the groove with all eight candles tall and steady all the way. Force squeaked into the provisional field on the bump spot.
Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.894 sec., 330ft-2.311, 660ft-3.284/265.01 mph.

Round 2 Qualifying

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan
JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 13th annual United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by Miller Welders listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Justin Schriefer Runs 6.582/166.07, Now #13; No Prior Run
1:52 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 63 percent, barometer 29.02 inches, adjusted altitude 3,134 feet, track temperature 102 degrees.
Schriefer's car sounded almost like he had a throttle stop on it, the RPMs never coming up much on the launch and he labored down the track.
Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.270/287.84, Now #4; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 4.288/283.61, Now #5; No Prior Run
Nice, easy runs for both drivers and a career-best ET 1,000 feet for "Peanut."
Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.397/259.86, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.182/151.68, Was #14
Right Lane: Jack Wyatt Runs 4.488/226.01, Now #8; No Prior Run
Last night, Force's car backfired and the burst panel did not open. That built up pressure that cracked the body from side to side, all the way to the fender wells, so today he is running one of Robert Hight's spare bodies, the black one.
Both cars were mixing the cylinders up on the top end and neither posted spectacular numbers. Then the safety crew started cleaning up "stuff" in Wyatt's lane, near the finish line.
Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.512/226.39, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.938/248.48, Was #15
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.593/135.73, Now #16; No Prior Run
Last night's Funny Car session was so bad that Bode's 4.938 was in the top twelve times. Bode's 8-year-old son Bobby won his first Jr. Dragster race and the reaction time award here at Rte. 66 Raceway last weekend, by the way.
This one was a bit better, but he used up a lot of the lane. Pedregon was smoking the tires and pedaling - but squeaked in on the bump spot.
Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.619/206.70, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.813/172.87, Was #15
Right Lane: Ashley Force Hood Runs 4.092/306.46, Now #2; No Prior Run
Force Hood made the second-best run of the weekend so far, right down the groove. Wilkerson improved from last night's bad run, but this one was no thing of beauty, with lots of pedaling and steering.
Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.469/131.23, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.681/244.47, Was #14
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.569/282.07, Now #13; No Prior Run
Force Hood's run bumped Cruz pedregon, putting Tony Pedregon on the bump spot at 4.774.
Arend rattled the tries and slowed. Worsham made a full pass, bumping Tony Pedregon from the field, but he had a dead cylinder or two.
Left Lane: Daniel Wilkerson Runs 4.243/283.91, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.564/203.89, Was #12
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.584/196.76, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.774/254.90, Was #17
Pedregon "lit it up" around the 660-foot marker, fighting to get the car stopped and the body up so the Safety Safari could put the fire out. Meanwhile, young Wilkerson made a good run to move into the top half of the field.
Pedregon's run bumped Jeff Diehl from the field, but Diehl is up next. Jeff Arend is on the bump spot at 4.681.
Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.885/164.57, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.552/194.94, Was #12
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl No Time, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.711/253.23, Was #17
Diehl's car "sprung a leak" when the crew tried to start it, the oil filter coming off, so they pushed the car to the return road and went to work with rags and mops to clean up the puddle.
Tasca's run started off well, then he lost traction and shut it off around the 660-foot mark.
Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.241/140.05, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.456/294.37, Was #9
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.740/171.40, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.142/304.53, Was #3
Hagan also has a spare body on his car for this round, the first body cracking when the car hit some bumps in the shutdown area last night. Hagan made a nice run last night, the best of the session until Hight delivered his stunning blow, while Capps did a very nice job of pedaling to get through some early tire shake.
Both cars went out about 500 feet, then struck the tires and slowed.
Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.159/287.78, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.151/297.29, Was #4
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 7.350/86.11, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.067/313.15, Was #1
Last pair. These two made the best and the third-best runs last night. As they sat waiting to fire, the crew, along with one or two crewmembers from Hagan's crew, suddenly clustered under the body of Beckman's car for some kind of thrash. Hight's crew patiently waited for them to take care of the problem and for Beckman's crew to fire the engine before cranking Hight's engine over.
When the light went green, Beckman went right down the groove, running within thousandths of his run last night, while Hight lost traction early in the run.

5 Jack Beckman (W)........vs.......... 116 Paul Lee 11:29 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 56 percent, barometer 29.19 inches, adjusted altitude 2,402 feet, track temperature 99 degrees.
This is the first time Beckman and Lee have faced each other in eliminations. Beckman was the only Funny Car driver to make more than one good run during qualifying, the track and weather conditions giving the crew chiefs fits during all three sessions. That probably doesn't matter much, conditions today are completely different than they were on either Friday or Saturday anyway - it's dry and sunny, with just a few scattered clouds.
Lee two-stepped the throttle on the launch and Beckman was unchallenged, taking the new DSR chassis right down the groove with results that almost duplicated his best qualifying run.
8 Bob Tasca III(W).......vs........ 302 Dale Creasy Jr.
This is the first time Tasca III and Creasy Jr. have faced each other in eliminations. Tasca found "his groove" in the final qualifying session and Creasy made his best 1,000-foot run ever in that same session.
Creasy led this one almost all the way, Tasca running him down in the last few feet of the track. Bob Tasca III's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.065), 330 ft(-0.050), 660ft(-0.018). MOV: 0.0144 seconds (approximately 6 feet). Creasy ran career-bests for ET and speed in a gallant losing effort. Tasca lost lane choice to Beckman in round two.
2 Ashley Force Hood (W)...........vs.......... 9 John Force
Force is 5 - 4 against Force Hood in prior events, 2 - 1 in the first round. They ended up facing each other after Cruz Pedregon's final qualifying run was disqualified because the car's body was too low, delaying the start of the timing clocks.
Force left first, but made his fourth bad run of the weekend while Force Hood's car made a nice run, one of the best so far at this event.
1 Robert Hight (W)......vs........ 3007 Justin Schriefer
Hight originally thought he would be running his boss, John Force, today, then the field was shuffled because of Cruz Pedregon's disqualified run. Hight is 1 - 0 against Schriefer in prior events, their only prior meeting coming in the first round last season.
Schriefer took a shot at the tree and was very early, but it probably didn't matter because Hight made the quickest run of the round so far.
2814 Matt Hagan(W).......vs........ 6 Tony Pedregon
Pedregon is 6 - 3 against Hagan in prior events, 2 - 2 in round one.
Both cars fired, then they were signaled to shut them off, the track crew spotting "stuff" in Schriefer's lane. Capps' car shut off cleanly, pedregon's was more stubborn, sputtering along for about 30 seconds before they finally got it stopped.
12:08 p.m. Not sure what it was, took a lot of work to clean it up.
They left together, but Pedregon started smoking the tires about 200 feet out and clicked it off.
28 Ron Capps......vs........ 170 Jeff Arend (W)
Capps is 7 - 1 against Arend in prior events, 6 - 0 in round one. It took both drivers three tries to get one good run in qualifying.
Arend got a small starting line advantage, then Capps took charge, but fell back on the top end. Jeff Arend's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(0.003), 330 ft(-0.024), 660ft(-0.020). MOV: 0.0601 seconds (approximately 23 feet). He will not have lane choice against Hagan in round two
. 340 Bob Bode(W).......vs.......... 348 Daniel Wilkerson
This is the first time Bode and Wilkerson have faced each other in eliminations, not surprising since Bode is a relatively new driver and Wilkerson is even newer.
Bode almost matched his qualifying effort to get the win light here, but he will not have lane choice against Force Hood in round two.
4 Tim Wilkerson (W)......vs......... 7 Del Worsham
Worsham is 15 - 12 against Wilkerson in prior events, 7 - 5 in round one. Both drivers struggled through the first two rounds of qualifying before getting things sorted out yesterday.
They left together, then both lost traction near the middle of the run. Worsham started smoking the tires first, then Wilkerson, giving Wilkerson a little more momentum and the win, by just over a car length. Wilkerson faces Hight in round 2, Hight has lane choice.
