1967 DODGE DART
 

ok, so i am looking at buying and building a 1967 dodge dart it is a 4 door and at the moment it has a slant 6

basically what i am looking at doing with it is customizing it and turning it into a resto mod that i can carry people (the reason i am wanting to look at a 4 door). i want to put a v8 in it, keep the auto tranny or upgrade it but keep it an automatic, add safety features, either air bags or hydraulics, update stereo system. i want to make it a good reliable family car with the fun of it being a muscle car and having the power to get up and go when i need it to. it is going to be mainly for show but also a driver.

i was wondering if someone could help me out by telling my about how much and how hard it is to do some of these things. i have been a mopar fan all my life, but this is my first chance to be able to build one and not only that it will be my first american build

If you upgrade to big block it will need a different tranny, not sure about the small block vs 6 cyl. If the funds are there I would look at Hotweelz's recent post -383 BB bored.060 Newly rebuilt . Looked like a good deal to me. Not much expeirence with darts but I would assume that swap has been done often and parts should be readily available? I am sure others will be able to help more.

67 is right, you can build some decent power with that slant 6. If you go with a V8, you'll want to keep it a SB V8as these cars came with 318s and 340s (some may have had 360s but I am not too sure on that). If you go with a BB V8, you'll have to upgrade the front suspension some to handle the extra weight, not to mention a tranny and rear axle.

If you decide to go with a SB V8, look for either a 318 or 360 as they will be a lot cheaper than a 340 and can be just as much fun. You'll need a 727 SB tranny to back up these motors. While you are at it, you might want to look into swaping the rear axle out for something stronger. There are plenty of aftermarket parts out there for this year car with a SB V8 in it (intakes, headers, cam, carbs, ignition upgrades, heads, etc).

The best advise I can give you is plan out exactly what you want to do and stick with it. It will cost you less in the end, and cost you less headaches as well.

All I can say is there is no substitute for cubic inches!

Hey im new to the site but I'll throw my two cents in. You can use Schumacher conversion motor mounts to install a small block in your dart.These mounts use the exsisting slant 6 K frame. Find a small block engine/trans at the pick-n-pull yard [try to find one out of a car so the oil pan fits your chassis]. You'll need a bigger radiator probably and exhaust manifolds from a 67-76 A-body [or hedders] , then you might change the rearend to one stronger if you have the 7 1/4 in it now.Up grading the brakes would also be a good idea [lots of ways to go for brake upgrades...cheapest would be "SCAREBIRD" setup in long run]{search net}. ...shorten driveshaft IF you go with the 727 trans and/or use larger rearend. Other issues will probably arise but these are the major ones. Air ride would be cool too but i'm not "hip" on the subject.[I'm sure it could be done.
