727 Trans Rebuild
 

So I rebuilt the valve body in my 727 trans, and when I opened it up originally there was some shavings on the filter, and I think there are two valve body screws missing. I am thinking that the clutches and the rest of the transmission should be rebuilt, and am thinking about doing it myself, how hard is this to do?

The trans only has 38k miles on it, and when I told a friend of mine that I thought $800 was a lot to have it rebuilt and I would do it myself he laughed and said the kits are 400-500, are his prices off or am I missing something?

Pretty straight forward. Theres alot of "nooks and crannies" that require some one off tools or alot of paitence.

$800 seems about right IF someone else wasy doing the entire rebuild. IE: They buy the parts, do the labor, ect.

You're buddy is about right on the price.

I'd recomend just having a professional do it because there are alot of parts, and they get confusing real quick. Just my 2 cents

I found the kit for $140 shipped from Mopar, so that was supposed to cost 400-500 so I assume the price would be less.

Id let a pro do it C as if you have never done it before you will have a hard time with it as even the older trans are less complicated there are way to many things that you might not get right and the money you think you will save might come up and bit you in the $%# later and for 800 that is a good deal if they have a warranty with it and they can check your converter and housing for stress and if you dont replace the pump and its going you will have to tear into it again but with 38 k on it im sure its ok but thats just my 2 cents :D

p.s sorry i forgot but the shavings in your filter are normal wear from your bands and thats why you are suppost to change it like you do your oil but not as much and the screws you say are missing id check into it because they cant get past your filter so maybe there isn't any missing ? but if it shifts fine and everything id just change the filter and fluid , tighten your bands to speck and drive it..............

I assumed it was normal wear as there aren't that many miles on it, but I needed to hear it from someone else. I know there are two missing screws, they could be in the case, it is out of the car and upside down at the moment, so they could be in there. When I pulled the valve body out there was a loose screw hanging too.

just make sure you find them , i wouldn't want you to ruin a good tranny with one screw, but hopfully they droped out before you noticed them

Like challenger said. The metal shaving are normal wear. you'll even get them if you rebuild the tranny.

As for the screws, if you can, shake the tranny right side up. They will probably fall out.

As for your friend's prices, he is off. Unless you have rebuilt trannies before, I wouldn't do it. You can mess something up very easiely. I would call around for pricing, $800 is about right for the bench time on a TH400 but as for the 727 it should be more like $550 to $650. The rebuild kits are going to vary in price depending on what they come with. I would be willing to spend a little extra on a good kit that is complete.

That is true. 38K on a 727 is nothing really. Maybe if there was 100K or more I would say do it.

Hey C im with 78 just find the screws and i bet your good to go and i had my challengers tranny just built in 07 with all the good stuff and also a new tc and the guy only charged me 920.00 which is a good deal in my book and i didn't even have to get dirty :D that was pulling it out of the car and everything and he said he even drove it for me to see if it would handle the power (bet he had a blast) hehehehe

I bet he did. I don't mind getting my hands dirty and learning something new, bet I could redo the valve body real quick now.

Well you guys are just lucky to live where you do. In Canada a transmission shop will charge up to $2100 to bebuild a 727 so you soon acquire the talent and the tools if you are doing more than one transmission.
