Air Cleaner rubbing on Hood Insulation

Guys,

My new air cleaner is rubbing on the mat causing it to rub the pie tin and look shi...y. Any suggestions besides the obvious? I think I need the mat due to the fact that the 440 is one loud beast but I might be wrong..

new air cleaner

How doe's it differ from your old one? Do you have any carb spacers? I have a Mopar Performance air cleaner and a 1" spacer under my carb. I went to the parts store and found a thinner element, had to cut the bolt that secures the lid shorter.

The last engine had a different set up completely. This one actually has no spacer. My last one did. I do have a RPM alum. manifold that might raise things a bit. I could cut the bolt, but it is pretty short as it is. Went to a KN lower profile air cleaner. I could lose the insulation but like I said I believe that would make the engine even louder than it is now.

X2 on the insulation.
It looks nice but most of your noise will be at the muffler area.
Getting a lower profile cleaner and cutting the bolt seems to be the only remedy.

Okay, I'm kind of a nerd and I LIKE the underhood insulation and your car looks really nice.

I don't have a good answer for you, unless maybe you can perhaps get another lower half to your air cleaner and kind of offset it to make it sit lower. I hope that makes sense.

If engine noise is an issue for you, read up on Hush-Mat. I've read really good things about them and they are very popular in the sled group I hang out with. My car is going to get a full passenger compartment set. Pretty spendy, but really nice.

Just need a deep/drop base on the bottem. Something like one of these:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PRO-66808/

What kind of a carb are you running? If its a holley, Holley make a base that is made to fit over the ends of the carb. If you are running an electric choke it might interfere with that, depends on how deep you go down.

Thanks 72! That's what I was unsuccessfully trying to convey.

One air cleaner for the road, and save the pretty one for Display. May have to relocate the coil for any drop-center bases.

sorry just a bit pissy now .
but very nice looking engine bay . those step down air cleaner's hurt air flow . like scotty said you could maybe use a kn style hi flow air cleaner with a stepped down base & filter element on top & just use the pie tin for show as it dose look trick .

Hmmmm, well IF you want to keep the shiny stuff on the carb as is, the only other alternative that hasnt been mentioned is to cut a circle out of insulation directly above the air cleaner. You can use the air cleaner as a template, and my possibly have to use some weather strip adhesive around the edge of the cut out circle.....

Thanks for all the suggestions...

I think I'm going to leave it as is and just let it be. I put a K&N low profile filter in her but it didn't really help much.

To be honest when I mash the long pedal to the floor I quickly forget what the air cleaner looks like and just focus on keeping her straight.
