Gas smell problem
Hello to all, long time reader first time to post.
I have 1970 Challenger 440 with Edelbrock carb (which i hate) After almost every time i drive i smell like a spill Gas all over me. Spoke with Edelbrock tech support and changed Main Jet and Metering Rod to reduce the amount of fuel going to the engine, it helped a lot but not enough. Also changed the exhaust manifold gaskets that helped as well since it was leaking BUT still it's smell so bad like raw gasoline and gets me nauseous sometimes. Carb float works fine Wife & kids refuse to drive with me HELP :yikes: Thx! |
check the needle and seat. ill bet it has dirt on it.

IS the exhaust system in good order?
Exhaust ran out the back of the Car? What eddy carb is it? |
I did a while back and cleaned it as well, no change in smell
|
OK... Thats a good start....
Do you or can you get the number off the carb you have? also Do you remember what you put in the carb to make it better.. If not thats ok.... I'll to see if i can come up with a decent setting for it. Just need to start with what carb it is. Also did you put a cam in the car or is it a stock replacement cam? Sorry for all the question... :) |

It has purple camshaft
|
I'll post something up tomorrow....Check back in..
Hay Moe....Do you a stock AFB Build Spec Sheet for the 440?...:hello: |
509 CAM ?
|
Try putting some chrome extensions on the ex pipes. Make sure all the holes in the firewall are plugged, Make sure the engine compartment seals on the cowl to hood are there. Big cams amplify the problem. all the body plugs installed..
|
I don't know what kind cam is it, just that its the purple cam
|
Not all the holes in the firewall are plugged i need to do that, it should help.
Thx |
do you have the cowl seal ?? doesn't look like much but is very important The exhaust needs to extend about 3" past the bumper
|
i have one for a 1967 440 AFB, handy. off the top of my head i can tell you to set the the float level to 5/16. thats what i have found works good. the stock setting is 7/32. but if 5/16 doesnt work go the 7/32 setting. idle mixture screw setting is 1 1/2 turns. the float drop is 3/4. but the float will hit the bottom of the bowel first. but you still need to set that dim so the needle jam before you set the lid on the base. dosent course there is 6 different carb numbers that for the 440 1967 was the last year for a AFB. inn 1968 Carter came out with the AVS. all so th first year for the lean idle mandated by the government. most AVSs will have a flat spot off idle. not easy to fix. but i can in just a few min.

Hummm...I thought I posted something last night on this...Oh well... Heres My 2 cents Go-Mango-440.... That 750 should fit the bill nicely on your 440. I'm not sure how much fuel you pulled out of it, but if it has all the (std) 750 parts in the carb? I would say try this set up.
Main Meter Rod 68X47 Primery Main Jet .098 Sec. Main Jet .101 Orange springs or the Pink Springs.... This will Pull a little over 100 CFM out of it. But it sounds like you need to get the exhaust leaks fixed, so everything go's out the back of the car first... Good Point TVlynn !!! :) One more Question...... What color are the plugs when you pull and look at them? Tan or Black? |
I'll try all the suggestions above & post back, unfortunately i'm 6000 miles away from my car on Vac & won't be able to do it in the next few weeks.
You all VERY helpful  just wish i post it two years ago |
Have a great time. Will be here to help... Have fun..
Cheers |
Is it raw gas smell, or exhaust fumes
|
I may be a little late replying but just wanted to say mine was doing the same thing. Tried everything and nothing worked. Turned out that the trunk weatherstrip wasn't sealing properly letting exhaust fumes into the car. Might be something to double check. Cheers!
