i wish i had sludge
i started swapping my intake today and when i pulled the old one off i noticed that it didnt look right. then upon closer inspection i noticed that there were chunks of old oil and gunk all over my pushrods. not little tiny clumps. some of them were the size of golf balls. my engine has been running fine so i assume my oil pump is still working but i cleaned it all out and filled a 2 liter soda bottle with clumps of oil. but this car did sit for about 11 years before i got it. ive been changing the oil regularly but i guess ill put some oil system cleaner in it from now on.

just try to clean up whatever you can

yeah, the 80`s 318s are bad for that, they tan lean due to the lean burn crap. so the heat rises didnt work good and all the oil laid around the lifter valley, and thats what you get over time. after you get the intake done, then run a quart of tranny fluid in it with the oil for 10-15 minutes, then drain the oil,and change the filter, and watch the assfault roll out of your pan.the trans fluid is a strong detergent and itll wash alot of the excess of the lifter vally and rails.

That works good, I have used diesel in the oil also for the flush.

if you use 8 ounzes of tranny fluid you can leave it in the engine for 1000 miles and that will REALLY clean it...
before you fire the engine i would drop the oil pan b/c no matter how carefully you try to clean all the crap under the intake most of it will fall in the pan and the last thing you want is a clogged up oil pick up screen and starve your engine of oil |

from experiance i can tell you that when you have a small amount of diesel mix with oil for any reason on a diesel engine it wipes the rod bearings quick. |
Last time I checked diesel was an oil, and i wasn't saying to leave it in there for 6 months.

i really dont find there to be a difference between diesel oil and just regular oil
