Tach install for a 68 Sat
 

Just picked up a Sun tach from Summit that I wanted to mount on the column. Can anyone help me as to how I get the wires from the column to the engine compartment? I would prefer not to drill the firewall. FYI This progect is alittle challenging for me. I rarely touch electrical issues. Thanks for the help.

do you have a tach in the car allready on the dash ? i dont remember what they have so thats why im asking

No tach in the car. Pretty bare bones interior. Radio delete car. I want to mount it on the column but can't figure out how to get the wires into the engine compartment.

i would check with the wiring diagram on that car and see if the bulk head for the wires has a spot for the tack or even an empty slot in there :D

look for any plugs that you can, and get a smaller groumit to hold both plugs
if not, you have to drilll into the firewall

The same rubber gromet that the speedo cable comes through is a good place as well. Just slip a piece of wire (coat hanger wire works) through the rubber and pull the tach wire through.

White wire (light to any other light wire under the dash)
Black wire Ground to any metal part of the dash
Colored wire, Often green, to the positive side of the coil.

finally got the tach installed and took a few pics. I had to extend the backet,then I painted it flat black and tucked the wires nicely.

When you said you extended the bracket, how?? I have a old Sun super tach II that my dad used when I was kid and wanted to put it on the colum of the Belvedere, but the shifter gets in the way. My second thought was under the dash in the center, but I really don't want it there...

the bracket that held the tach is shaped like a spoon that screws into the back of the tach. I cut the shaft (handle of the spoon) and had a 1" extension welded into the bracket. Then I painted the bracket and the hose clamp flat black and attached it to the steering column. I had to put it to the left of the steering column because the shifter does get in the way. I toiled over this for a long time and this was the best case senario in order to get old school look of a tach on the column. If you need more pictures let me know...good luck
