Tune up Questions

Hello All, I was doing some work on the Ramcharger, and decided to do a tune up on it. It is an 88 with a 318, and roughly 136xxx miles. Holley Carb, first question:
Did they come stock with Holleys?.

Upon pulling the plugs out, they were black and wet, smelling like gas. I did new plugs wires and distributor cap. I took it out on a test drive I went to give it some pedal and it bogged out and stalled. The truck was warm mind you. I was told by someone that it could be my timing chain. Personally I think the carb might just need turned back, so as not to give it so much gas at once. So the Second Question:
Does this sound like the timing chain? Or should I get the carb turned back?

Thanks in Advance for the help! Any input appreciated!

Thanks,
Brandon

I have seen a lot of Holley carbs being used on stock motors from the factory. My 78 had a factory 2 barrel Holley on it. With your old plugs being black and wet, it sounds like your carb has been dumping gas into your motor. I would retune your carb and check your timing. Also, maybe think about upgrading the ballast resister and coil to something that puts out more volts.

It sounds from here that it's running rich, check carb adjustments and maybe even jet size. Does your oil smell like gas also, if so you're really running rich and this needs to be addressed asap as you're washing your cylinder walls.
Let us know man.

Thanks for the reply's, It went to a buddies house tonight, he is doing the timing, and I asked him to check out the carb. I was told to check the timing with the vacuum lines, but I had no idea how to do that.. How is that done?
