Voltage range for points
My 68 is acting up again, and I am suspecting excessive voltage. I was getting 14.7-14.8 V at around 1500 rpm yesterday. Later, I was at 14.4. Power windows etc seemed to move faster than usual. I think this may be excessive, and may be frying the points. Any knowledge of what the maximum voltage should be? I thought around 14V is about right.

Over 15.0 volts and your in trouble...
Check Grounds... The regulator might be no good. |

Check Grounds... The regulator might be no good. But you are suggesting that 15.0 volts is the trouble, 14.8 is ... OK? |
At 14.8... That would be a crap shoot.... Trust your meter or call it defective.. Me.. I would call it defective and get a new regulator. Make sure the grounds throughout the car are all in good shape.
As for the point Burn issue.... That to me would lead me back to a ballast resistor problem or just plan cheaply manufactured parts maybe. Just my point of view,,, |
Check the voltage on each side of the ballast resistor. I think ideal voltage on the coil side of the resistor is around 9 volts. When you change your points, be sure to change the condenser too.
