17 volts?
 

So driving home from work today i noticed my car was charging at 17 volts and going crazy. Its a 440 and it only does this once in a very rare occasion. can anybody tell me what would cause this? thanks

Voltage regulator or alternator.

your bit bucket is full. just dont let the newtrons use the red wire.

There are several things that can cause this...............

What year / model are we workin' on, and what alternator / regulator do you have?

Was the battery low? My Fury will charge a little harder on occasion if the battery is low and then, once the battery is back to full charge, go back to normal...

The car is a 1980 dodge aspen that i crammed a 440 into. the alternator came with the engine when i bought it so i dont know much about it other than it works. its my daily driver and had no problems starting and driving so i know the battery wasnt low. the voltage regulator is stock to the car but has worked fine the past 8 months ive been driving it.

It should have a two field alt. SO the reg is probably bad and the battery too !!!
17V will kill the battery in short order

I'm going to say... It needs a battery... I would rule it has a plate loose in there causing your intermittent problem....

mopar regulators are cheap enough i would change it also what would it hurt?
