440 external oil pump modification
 

Hey,

I'm new to this forum, and I had a question about modifying the the external oil pump for a 440. Is it possible to modify the pump to accept an external oil line from a pick up in the pan if you block off the internal line, redrill and tap into the oil pump hole on the pump, fitting the appropriate line fittings. Does this present a problem?

I would say your easiest route and probably safest is change the oil pan and then run what ya want.

why would you want to do that?

What do you mean by change the oil pan? The reason I was looking at doing this is to setup and external oil system on my 440. I am putting this 440 in my Dakota, and had to put a notch in the oil pan to clear the cross member. Being that, I have to extend out the oil pickup to clear the notch. When I extend the pickup, it causes possible issues with clearance. That is why I mention to go with the external oiling system, is to totally get rid of the internal pickup setup, plus I am on a budget. I know how the systems can get pricy!

maybe a flexible line could be used in place of the steel tube? you'd have to find a way to mount the pickup securely in the rear of the pan and still be able to thread the line end. one big risk is having a bad hose as the oil deteriorates the rubber.

Yea, that is what I thought with using a flexible line. I knew with the internal pressures and the oil breaking down the rubber, that it probably would not be a good idea to use a hose inside the oil pan. I figured if I was going to do it, I might as well do an external line with better oil flow than the more restrictive internal pipe. So you don't think it is feasible to modify the pump?

if i recall correctly the pump mounts on the outside of the block. i don't think any surface, even if it is in the right spot, will support a large enough hole. i guess that's why they get the big bucks for the dry sump system.

yes you can run an "External Line" straight off of the oil pump housing {special cover made by Milodon and others} and route it into the oil pan through a fitting mounted into the oil pan wall. You can use steel braided line or hard line. On the inside of the oil pan where the fitting goes through you can mount the pickup. They even have one that "swings" for the oil accumilation caused by the inertia of the car as it launches. You can run one line or two. One is good for the street. Yes the original threaded hole for the original pickup will need to be plugged {easy to get pipe plug}

BTW, this is one of the adv antages of the big block mopars (hemi's too)'
you can put the oil pickup where you want it {within reason} because the oil pump is mounted on the outside of the block.

Sorry, what I meant to say was can you modify the stock pump by drilling and tapping a new hole. That way you could save $ by not having to buy the whole oil system setup. I know it can be pretty expensive specially when your on a budget. Basically, what is the difference betweent the Milodon pump cover with external line provisions and modifying a stock pump cover to except external lines? I know as mentioned above that there might not be enough room to tapp that big of a hole, and you might be right. Something I'd have to look in to. Thanks for your help guys! :)
