65 Valiant rear axles

Ok, I'm about to do the brake job all the way around and I'm wanting to detail a little as I go. I want to remove the rear backing plates so, do I just remove the 4 bolts and then the axle slides out? what is the trick to getting them out? simple terminology not technical works so good for me. thnx.

Start by going here:

or here

and download yourself a factory service manual. They are free

Look at Chapter 3, "rear axle." You have a 7 1/4" rear axle? If so, these are not a "C clip" type axle. You have flat, flanged axles, IE NOT the older tapered axles with the great big nut on the end? If so, the drums should come off the axle flange without removing the axle or backing plate

If you need to remove the axles, normally you would first remove the rear drums. They may be rusted to the axle. Heat, penetrant, and cuss words usually works

Otherwise, you might MIGHT "might" (might) be able to cut the "nails" which retain the shoes, remove the four inboard retainer nuts and pull the drums and axles as a unit, then work on separating them.

READ the manual. There is an adjustment on one axle for axle end play, because this SHOULD be (originally) tapered rear bearings.

The drum needs to be removed before the axle bolts can be accessed to remove them.. May need a slide hammer to remove the axle or length of chain (atach to lug nut Then attach to ?? pull hard. A 5 lb hammer and some PB Blaster works on the drum..

ive got the drums off, and all the brake parts removed and awaiting new pieces for install. I'm wanting to remove the backing plates to pressure wash and prime/paint. I have a manual from the download.

yeah, looks like i'll be taking some brake cleaner, rust cleaner, and a wire brush to it...while they are still on and then tape and paint. sounds a lot easier
