68 Road Runner-wiring behind dash
 

68 RR-wiring behind dash-car will start most of the time. My mechanic says the old wiring is brittle, many times spliced, and is unreliable. Do they make a wiring harness for behind the dash? I've been told no. I fear if I take it out for drives, it will shut off or not start after I turn the eng. off. Mechanic says all it takes is a little vibration or shaking up of the wires and it will shut down. Do I need to replace all those wires? I have already replaced the wiring on the firewall under the hood with a new wiring harness. I also worry about a short/fire. Your input would be appreciated! Thanks. Mopar or no car!!!

Well there's a lot of ways to go. You have to look around.

1...Wiring problems are almost never the wire "per se". Rather, problems are almost always the terminals, connectors, etc. The bulkhead connector and ammeter circuit is a HUGE factor

2...Decide whether you want to keep it factory or not, because you can't have things both ways. If you start adding electric fans, putting in big hp with big fuel pumps, electric water pump, and or a huge stereo, the factory wiring is not gonna make it

3...So far as a source, you just have to google. there are several suppliers, which may or may not come from the same source. Prices vary.

4...Much of it you can rebuild yourself. If the connector bodies (such as headlight) is OK, you can obtain the Packard 56 terminals and redo the connectors yourself.

I simplified my under dash circuits with the use of a Circuit Boss panel from Painless.
The panel I use is 8 circuits with two relays built in. The panel comes alive when the key is turned on and has one "live" circuit for clock etc. Comes complete with dual overload protection, is small and mounts easily. Nothing, and nobody comes close to the products that Painless make. I've tried them all - Francis, American Autowire etc.
