Ok this might be a dumb question but how can you tell the difference between a 69 roadrunner,satellite and gtx?

I know gtx's had the line on the side with the word "gtx" and the roadrunner had the cartoon with the speed line behind it. I was looking at pics of a old beat up 69' RR but it doesn't have the cartoon and the front headlight/grill looks flat instead of slighty slanted like most RRs are.

Is there a way to tell the difference between a RR and satellite simply by just looking at the body?

 

Start by decoding the VIN. I believe all Roadrunners in 69 started out RM. As an example, my '70 was RM23VOA...... The "V" is the engine code and on mine indicates this is a "440 sixpack" car

The only engine options for a true Roadrunner in 69 were the 335 hp 383, the 440 sixpack in late 69 (69 1/2) which had ONLY fiberglass hoods with the big scoop, or a 426 hemi.

If the VIN shows ANY other engine it is not a Roadrunner. ONLY the other models could be had with a 440 4 bbl (375 hp) such as GTX, or in the case of the satellite/ belvedere, other engines like 318 or /6

So far as I know, any extra chrome trim such as used on a Satellite/ GTX was NOT available as an option for a RR. The grille being "incorrect" after all these years may not be telling as the original could have been damaged and easily replaced in a few minutes with a junkyard grille out of a Belvedere, etc.

Not sure, I BELIEVE all RR's in 69 came with the "air inlets" on the hood, IE some were functional Air Grabber and some were dummies. I don't believe a "flat hood" was an option. Here again, if the front - end was dinged up years ago, someone might have................
