74 scamp build

New here and was wondering what is some inexpensive ways to build up my scamp has slant 6. So what rear end is best to use and what motor?

What is your goal for the car? Street cruiser? Some street and strip action? All strip action?

The slant 6 can be built up some and produces some respectable numbers. You most likely have a 7.25 axle in the rear which should be upgraded to a 8.25 if you plan on building the slant 6. It can handle up to a mildly built 318-360. Any more motor than that and i'd look into an 8.75 or D60.

Exactly what 78 said, budget will be part of the decision too.

I plan on just making it a cruiser something to take the kids to shows in but have a little fun myself. Would the 8.8 work in it?

The Explorer 8.8 is popular if you have fabrication skills to shorten one side and use another short side axle.

If your looking for a 318-360 warmed up cruiser engine, you may want to look for a 8.25" Mopar. Many guys with much more HP are taking them out for 8.75" or D 60's and I'm sure you could find one for a reasonable price.

No fabrication, bolt in and plenty strong for a fun cruiser.

Oh the engine part, usual 4 bbl, intake, cam and headers, your 318 = 300hp, your 360 = 350hp.

400 and up horsepower is getting serious with pistons, heads and big camshaft.

Just be honest on how much power are you really going to use.

How would I tell what rear end is in it now? Also is there different axles with bigger bolt hole patterns I can put in also for the front spindles are those easy to switch to. Sorry for all the questions but I would like to make sure it's done right.thanks

Ok it has the 7 1/4 rear end so I'm starting to look for the 8.25. Thanks that helped a lot.

You have talked about the Ford 8.8, here is a tech article on the Explorer axle. It's not hard to find one with a 3.55, 3.73 or 4.10 limited slip.

The car and ranger 8.8 are 28 spline all explorer are 31.

The 8.8 is out of a 97 grand marquis but if it is easter to find the 8.25 rather than cut and refab the 8.8 it might be best to do that.
