I bought a kids/dads 87 d150( it was registered antique) had it towed to my house its in very good cond. BUT they had the brainy idea to strip all emissions off, I am afraid I bit off more than I can chew how and what is needed to get this thing running. any help would be greatly appreciated

Emissions are a tough subject , while your truck can be made to run well without them it's not legal. Hopefully you got everything that has been removed.

Iowan, I didn't get any of the emissions stuff , I got a 4bbl manifold with it, the dad said they had it registered antique, from what I found out is antique's don't need inspection in pa ?

What state do you live in?

I live in Pennsylvania.

It would be best to make it conform with the laws in your state. I think you should be able to find the parts you need in a yard. The problem with removing the emission is there are fines if you get caught. At one time it was 10k for a converter.

People do it but I'm not going to tell you to. Maybe someone else here can tell you how to get around the laws in Pennsylvania. But the truth is its federal law that requires the emissions equipment on vehicles. I don't know how many states don't inspect vehicles and even some only go back 25 years some go back to 1976. Some parts and modifications are exempt and legal, carb, intake, headers, cat back exhaust etc..
Clean emissions does not have to mean low power look at the 700+ horsepower cars from mopar. |
Not a problem, I have it registered as an antique therefore I need no more inspections or registrations.
|
How much can you drive it, what kind of restrictions are put on the vehicle.
|
2500 miles a year for pleasure or shows and must have 12 volt electrical system for the headlights
|
That's not to bad, can you use the pickup as a pickup? Do they actually track the mileage?
|
No, the truck isn't supposed to be used as a moving or construction vehicle and mine WILL NOT be used as that I took the factory bed liner out and the bed is cherry not one dent a little rubbing from said bed liner and looks like I should be able to buff most out. the guy's had the bench seat recovered in FACTORY MATERIAL, they claim it cost them a chunk of change. It has a beautiful patina, not sure if I will keep it that way or not, I like the original ice blue/royal blue two tone with absolutely no rust! And as of for the mileage there is really no way for them too, the mileage on the antique title has exempt that's it no numbers just exempt.
|
Cool!
working around the missing parts should not be much of a problem, just think 1970.🙂 |
what are the laws in your state ?? Some do not require smog if more that 25-30 years old ???

TVLynn, I live in Pennsylvania. Regular registered vehicles get emissions and safety inspection and yearly registration. Classic registered vehicles are exempt from emissions but must have yearly safety inspections and driven less than 5k per year and no more registration renewal. Antique registered vehicles do not need emissions or inspection and driven 2500 miles or less and no more registration renewal.
|
In that case you just need to remember to unplug the speedo cable under the dash if your getting close to going over the mileage. :)

Racerhog, I want to thank you and Iowan and everybody that's chiming in makes me feel accepted any way's I'm not really concerned about the mileage, they didn't need to know it on the title so, and living in pa our roads suck so I doubt I will put a lot of miles on it, cruising, maybe a show or event. I located a 360 that I picked up for something to play with during these winter months and eventually it will find its way into the engine bay. (I really would of loved a big block 440 but they are a little to rich for my blood) Then that's when car show guys get nasty, it didn't come that way you screwed with an antique and shouldn't have while they are driving a blown chevy powered small block model T. Them are the guys that piss me off,, I'm pretty sure that old Henry Ford didn't put a gm engine in them and at least mine will stay all MOPAR.

You could do a stroker kit in your 318 but is not hard to build a 400 hp 318, and that would be fun. I'd like to see more pictures of the pickup.

I wanted to do a 440 in my truck.... But I have to Smog the dam thing still.... Soooooo, I struggle to keep it within the limits....lol
But I'd do a 500" daily driver in a minute if I didn't have to smog it all the time. One day maybe, will have to wait and see... lol You are welcome, we like new faces around here.... Some sites are rough. I think we are easy going here !!!! :) Keep us posted on your rides... :) |
