Air Pump Delete?
I own a '89 D150 with a 239 v6. The old exhaust system was rusted through, so I replaced it with a cat-less system. It has a single lead pipe with a series 40 flowmaster muffler and dual exhaust exiting the back. Sounds perfect...nice idle...mean growl on acceleration.
Recently the air pump is starting to make a loud whining noise on acceleration. Sounds like a "lawnmower". Think its a bad bearing. Question is...replace?..or delete the air pump system? And...if delete is cool....can the air pump system be replaced with a turbo? Thanks. |
Sounds like you dont have to do any emission smoging up there in the DC area.
So in that case you can pull of what ever you would like.... Your turbo build on the other hand will have to a more specific build. |
You'll have to look into local inspection and smog regulations as each state is different.
If there is no smog control in your area, most places won't say anything about not having an air pump. Not having a cat though, they may. Luckily you can get a universal cat and throw it inline with little to no effort. Just make sure the cat is rated for the weight of the truck and payload. As for installing a turbo in place of the air pump, no it's not that simple unfortunately. |
Yea up here in Maryland if your car is over 20 years old you don't have to go through emissions or inspections. Its kind of sweet actually. They even give you a choice of Historic or Street Rod tags! Lol. Will seriously consider deleting the smog pump. The turbo thing may have to wait.
Thanks for the help. :uzi: |

If I delete the smog pump do I need to run bigger belts to make up for the delete?
|
You could always create an idler pulley in place of the smog pump. Not sure if a belt from the 1st gen Dakota will fit but you may be able to go that route too.
