Question bad fuel pump??

i was on my way to school today when my car died, popped the hood and fuel filter was dry, ok i just ran out of gas, put 1 gallon gas, runs good for 2 miles then dies right at school. popped hood and fuel filter dry again, i was thinking this cant be right, 2MPG!! i put more gas and dies again after 2 more miles, i just put 6 gallons in and filter was dry so i knew it had gas. put some starting fluid in carb and started her up. filter full of gas again, ran another 2 mins. and dead, dry filter, reprime carb restart and go 2 more mins. and dead. does this sound like my pumps going out? its mech.

Take a gas can, and run your fuel line from the can, to the pump and try running it. If it keeps running, you have a problem w/ most liky the fuel lines.

If it doesn't stay running and you keep running into these problems, replace the pump and filter.

hey sgp is it the car in the pic or is it a car with an electric pump , if its a car with a manual pump im sure the diaphram is bad in it or the arm is worn out enough that it isnt pumping enough fuel for a period of time but if its an electric one in your tank then id pull it out and check the filter in the tank as it could be cloged but im sure it is the pump either way so change it out and im sure you will have fixed the problem

Ill go with 68 gts, try the fuel can to pump thing first, if the thing wont run its the pump, if it runs its from the pump back, sometimes, the fuel inlet tube of the sending unit has a sock on the end of it to keep crap out of the line, after time the thing starts falling apart, itll ither get sucked up into the line pluging it, causing what youre seeing. or it will cave in on itself, plugging the line then causing what your seing, the quickest way to tell is unhook the fuel line befoe the filter, and blow air back through it to the tank. then start it, if it runs, you know youll need to drop the tank and remove the sending unit and replace the sock. youll need to drop the tnk anyway to clean it out.the sock pcs. are washing around , youllneed to thoroughly clean the tank out.
