Is the car running? If not the first thing to do is get it running so you know what you are starting with. I'd recommend doing a driving project. Doing small parts at a time will keep the car running and drivable while you are working on it. Too many cars are disassembled with the best intentions only to become overwhelmed and sold because they got out of control.

Next, know what you finished goal is going to be. This may sound simple but it is possibly the most important. Is this going to be a cruiser? drag car? G-machine? these all have different parts and will need different attention to different parts of the car.

Making the car a safe dependable driver should be first. Making sure all the various systems are in place and sound is first. Running? OK. Now brakes (you gotta stop), cooling system, suspension (ball joints, control arm bushings, tie-rod ends,...) no fun if the wheels fall off, tires, belts, hoses. Got all that stuff done and safe? Now the fun stuff, bodywork and paint.

Doing a small project at a time will give you satisfaction and will motivate you to do the next project. Go slow, take your time and take plenty of pictures.

Good luck.
