can i run a solid cam with hydraulic lifters?

1 Attachment(s)
I brought this cam for my supercharged 360 magnum engine. I was going to run solid lifters with it but now i would like to save a few dollars and run my existing hydraulic lifters. Can i use hydraulic lifters on a solid cam. The only difference i can see between a hydraulic cam and a solid cam is the lobe width or is it more complicated than that?
cheers Maca

Great question! You should contact Comp Cams for the answer, and then post it here. For the record I say go for it, (besides the used lifter part).

I have contacted comp cams but being a question from Australia it can take 3 to 4 days to get a response as they must be busy. I will post the answer when I hear from them.

I have heard that the clearance ramps can give the hydraulics trouble at low RPM`s.

Personally I would not do it.

The lobe profile is different. I would not do it

Not a good Idea....

Don't do it.

"Existing." This implies you have USED these hydraulics. You NEVER put used lifters onto another cam. The opinions, generally, is that you can re-use lifters IF they are indexed to the original cam lobes.

I measured the 2 cams up and it looks like it would work fine but the general coconscious seems to be not a good idea so I will go solid lifters. Comp cams didn't give me a reason but said (It's not typically recommended)
I have not run a solid cam before so what preload do I run on them?
Zero lash or small preload?

YOU need adjustable rocker arms and different push rods

Coronet 500 Mar 10, 2014 04:48 PM

If they are OEM Magnum I'd go .020" - .060".

just saw the valve adjustment on the cam card
cheers

Coronet 500 Mar 11, 2014 03:31 PM

That valve adjustment shown for solid lifters is the gap between valve stem and rocker tip.

For hydraulic the pushrod should go into the lifter and depress the plunger with no slack or gap in the valve train.

I thought you were going to be using hydraulic roller lifters on a solid cam.

Yes at this stage just throwing the idea out there to see if anyone has done it.
On my Hydraulic cams I usually run .060 but I have never run a solid before so I would just set as per the card.
Cheers

PS I have really noisy lifters on my 360 magnum that one seem to pump up all the time. Very rattly. I recently replaced all of them and the new ones seem to be the same. Don't seem to pump up all the time. Anyone else had this problem with magnum lifters? I question their quality as they are only about $110 for a full set. My oil pressure is fine too.
