Cracked my tail housing on 727?
 

First of all, great site as I've managed to find lots of useful information throughout; so keep the threads flowing. My question; has anyone broke a tail housing on a 727 transmission and if so; was there a reason for it to occur? This big bang happened to me while doing some rather hard shifting, I thought that I destroyed the convertor, but when I came to a stop she still had gears. I lost most of my oil limping her home, but I still had gears. I figured that I tore a motor mount, but the engine and tranny mounts are all still in perfect condition?? Added more oil and all gears still enguage. Anyway I start tear down tomorrow, so if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. Would a worn tail bushing (run out) have caused this to happen?

all the vibration from the driveshaft cracked his tail housing

Thanks, I was wondering the same, I had my driveshaft re-tubed and balanced (:rolleyes:) just prior, but now I hear that the shop that did the re-work isn't as reputable as I thought? I'm going to have it checked elsewhere while I have it off (maybe it's to long as well?). I attached a pic of the housing for those that have not seen something like this before; as it's a first for me and yup..... it ended up being more then just a crack.

Normally in racing its a u joint that starts the problem.. When they lock up the tail shaft is next to go and then the converter. I would check the converter while you are down... Be easier to refreshen it now than after you get it all back together and then discover its done also.. Been there and done that already.... :(:(

Yeah, I'm thinking your right about the converter:(. I put everything back togethor today, then went to take her for a short test run just to find a major shake/vibration as soon as I gave it some throttle. Aside from your housing and conveter, did the rest of the transmission work ok or should I be anticipating a tranny rebuild.

I would check it all....... I did and found several problems in the tranny......

I had this happen in my duster race car. It was a combination of u-joint, bearing, and trans mount loose. Mine wasnt a big bang though it was just a found leak, although I bet the big bang was coming.

My dad had a 68 r/t coronet, it completely broke on him though. He was going really fast... like top end on a long stretch of highway and it just broke... I would guess the reason like was said above would be a combination of things such as bad u joint, bearings, and possibly a tranny mount. Only thing that really makes since to me is a lot of vibration. He was never much of a mechanic and had someone else fix it... and this was a very long time ago and I'm sure he has no clue of what caused it anymore.

Your car is not ridged enough

No your right, it doesn't have any other support from rail to rail which is something that I've already been looking at. I also agree that this was a result of torque and twist since the damage is before the tranny mount. Looks like at little fab work is in order:o, thanks for the replies.
