dana 60 and all other rears for mopars
|
If you want a factory dana , you need to get a 71 model year , they changed the width then as per the chart, but in early 72 they went from a dana to what they called a corporate dane. it was their version of a dana only cheaper built, and not as bullet proof. You can buy a new dana from moser axles, complete for your car bolt in around 2 g`s. if you get a 66-70 dana and have it modified, youll have more then that in it. Unless your gonna run over 500 horse for the street, id use the 8 3/4. its very tough. and they put it behind hemi auto`s. so that tells you the reliability of them.

there was a guy local to me that was selling a Dana 60 5 lug from a mopar a few months back. I would think that they are just as strong as the 8 3/4 but I could be wrong.
Me though, I'd probably just throw a FF D60 in and call it good.:D |
i always thought dana 60's were stronger than the 8 3/4
|
i'm not sure. Did they put the 8 3/4 in only some vehicles and the others got dana 60s? or did they only put the 8 3/4 in all vehicles til a certain year and then the dana 60 replaced it (or vis versa)?
I do know that the 8 3/4 is a really strong axle. i'm not sure how it would compare to a 5 lug dana 60, but i think a ff d60 is stronger than a 8 3/4. (i'm also more of a wheeler so.....) |
the 8 3/4 was standard on 340 and up motored cars. till you hit the 440. if you got a 4spd -440. then you automatically got the dana 60. it was a medium duty truck axle. resplined for a pass, car.same w/ hemi, auto got the 8 3/4, 4 spd, got the dana. yes the 8 3/4 is a tough rear. but the dana under even excessive street use is nigh bullet proof. where the other isnt. i`ve blown my share of 8 3/4`s doing burnouts , and street racing, but i have yet in 23 years to hurt my dana cars. hands down its the best performance rear.

agree completely with rr69half6bbl
if your were a 440 or hemi 4 speed, you got the dana i have it on my car stock, and when i had the cover off on it, i noticed how huge and thick the gears were |
belive it or not i found a 68 GTX in a barn in 06. the car had sat there since 71. it had 21k on the odo.the guy who had it was gonna build a drag car with it, it ws a 440 -4spd.the dana had 4.88`s in it and the car was cut up in the front. but the rest of it was all there. I got the dana and trans and went through them, the teeth in the trans didnt even have a wear pattern on them, the main cluster gear still had sharp edges on it. the dana. was gone through in 71, when I went through it, i put 3.73s in it. but the paint was still on the 4.88 gear set. i couldnt beleive it. an old drag racer bought the car from the first guy who didnt finish it, parked it in the barn then never messed w/ it.

the dana was an option like anything else, alot of hemi cars in auto had a dana. but were optioned that way. there was a few articles years ago, in 1 of the mopar mags where galen gav. did the numbers article, and he covered this topic, and said that the 8 3/4 was standard fare for hemi ,w/ auto. a buddy has a 66 hemi coronet, its an auto w. 8 3/4 rear and its all orig.

If you ordered an automatic 440 or hemi, (not sure about other engines)
you got the 8 3/4 rear if you ordered stick, because of the high torque, you got the dana 60 |

Without my old "build code" books I really don't know, I just don't remember loading the Dana on a Hemi, stick or automatic. Now if I could come across some of my old build code bookslets. We used the 8 3/4 on the 440's, but I don't remember them on the Hemi's, but that has been a long time. During that period I was a General Supervisor in the Chassis Department. Had I thought you were "pissing in my wheaties" I would have noted that and I came to this forum for help, not arguements especially about something I don't remember. The knowledge on this forum is unbelievable. Arge |
sweeeet, I am glad. yes i agree, the knowledge here is top shelf. and the folks are more tuned in then some other sites ive been too.
