which do you prefer

i am bouncing ideas in my head for when i rebuild my 340 in my dart and i was wondering do you guys prefer timing chain, timing gears, or belt driven timing is one better than the other i would like to get 400-425 hp out my motor would this have any impact on which would be the better way to go

Always been a fan of a good quality metal double roller chain, but theories may have "chainged". Simple (no meshing issues) and pretty bomb-proof.

Gears are usually used for high rpm engines. I would just go with a double roller chain just as Archer said. Simple and relatively inexpensive.

all small block motors I have ever built or helped build has been double roller chain

double roller chain seems to be the way to go
just make sure it clears the timing cover

The chains are cheaper but they will stretch over time. I say go with a set of gears.

x2 gears are coming down in price also

noisy gear drive

i was leaning toward the noisy gear but didnt know if it would properly fit a 340 at about 425 hp.... it should work ok??????

1966sportfury 06-15-2010 08:59 AM

it will work fine

I have been a fan of the metal double roller set up. Pretty reliable, reasonable price. Yes, they will strech over time, but what else on you engine won't have to be replaced over time? The gears are noisy and expensive.

I had a set of "quiet" gears on my 383 BB pushing ~600HP. never had a problem.

What did the setup cost?
