Gauges

My coolant temp gauge and fuel gauge dosent work. I am wanting to just put a cheap temp gauge on and try to fix the gas gauge. What could make a gas gauge not work and how do i fix it and how do i install a aftermarket temp gauge? is it very hard?

not hard, but with all electricals - it requires time and patience to route the wires so they dont look like a bowl of spaghetti. electrical gauges need a wire to the sending unit, a hot and a ground as well as hot and ground for lights. mechanical only need the lighting but you have to route capillary line.

i'm not sure if applies to your year but.......

Chrysler used a voltage regulator on the back of the gauge cluster. the ones i remember had three flat blades that slid into the cluster board.

i'd start by checking the ground and battery feed to the gauges.

It might not be your fuel gauge but your sending unit, same with your temp gauge, or it could be a broken/shorted wire.

There is a wire/clamp type thing that grounds the fuel sending unit on the fuel line as it goes into the tank. Check that, you may find your problem.

PS, it is not the wire on the sending unit. It is a piece of metal, like a thin strap that attaches the line to the sender.

ok thanks
i'll check on that

quick test. with the key on put test light end into the plug connector for the tank sending unit, if the light blinks on and off repeatedly then the wire is fine from the gauge to the tank , it is an intermitent signal supposed to go on and off. if it stays on the wire is grounded somewhere from gauge to the tank , that wire runs from the dash down the drivers side floor pan to under the back seat then through to the trunk and down through the trunk floor under the spare tire. If no signal then the wires ither shorting out or the gauge isnt working, if the sifnals fine then its the graound strap crazy mentioned or the sending units bad.
