HELP! Can't remove wheel!
 

Hi Guys!

Do I feel dumb about posting this one!

Need to take the front wheels of my 64' Plymouth to go get them balanced (high speed vibration) I can get the passenger side off with no problem, but the drivers side is a different story!

Non of the 5 lugs will budge, Impact wrench won't move them, Breaker bar with a 3' snipe won't move them. Torque wrench has them at 280+ lbs/ft I can see one being stubborn but all five?

Now are the wheel studs on the drivers side right or left hand treads? I know all modern cars are right hand tread, but i had an old Triumph which had left had threaded studs on one side and right on the other! Could this be the case with my Fury?

Don't want to try and muscle them off for fear or breaking a stud off!

I ran into the same problem with my 68 Valaint. Thr right front and left rear will be one way and the left front and right rear will be the other way. There should be a letter on the end of the stud. Either a "R" or a "L" indication the thread. I'd assume that you have left hand threaded studs on the left front side there.


I changed all of the studs on my Valaint to be right hand thread to prevent something like this happening to me again.

There are no L or R markings on the nuts but there is a notch on the sides, right now I'll assume that notch indicates L/H treading, going to go try to remove them as they were L/H threads and see what happens!

I don't know what or why a company would do that with the studs, but I have seen crazier things. Hopefully it works out for ya.

Yep Left side of the car were Left Hand threads, Right side were Right Hand threads!

Now with that problem solved I'm off to the wheel shop to get them balanced. But I did find another mystery once they were off, but that will be another thread!

Had to teach my son to bust the lugs all by hand because both mine have the left handed lugs still installed. The tire shops hate me; one place broke a lefty one by using the impact and I refused to allow a RH to be installed. It was a very long day for them indeed.

i was once told it was believed that a loose left hand threaded nut would not back off as much while rotating on the left side. send this one to myth busters.

I've heard that too. I must admit, I've never encountered a loose LH lug though.

Well my right front and left rear were left hand thread and the left front and right rear were right hand thread. I don't know....... I just don't know.

tim, turn the car around, it'll work out fine ;-) it looks like somebody rotated the front drums. just be glad it's not too easy to swap the axles. LOL

did u try the other way?

sounds like someone swaped the drum/hubs around, fact. screwup?

Hey, one of the Mopar "rights of initiation" is dealing with the left hand lugs. I know I did. I had a 66 charger, a breaker bar and a 3/4 deepwell. Wanted to mount a set of cragar wheels. The cursing and busted knuckles ensued. Finally I gave up, my bud came over and we left. {he was just as dumbfounded}. Stopped at a friends shop that we had just met and was informed about the left hand threads, the guy was LOL the whole time we were explaining the problem. Like I said, it's just part of the initiation process. You curse and everyone else laughs!!

Kind of reminds me of sending the new guy out to get spots for the spot welder, or a box of grid squares.

100ft of flight line and a bucket of rotor wash. Cable stretcher, muffler bearing, piston return spring, spotted paint, an aluminum magnet,etc.

I agree, I have to replace some studs on my left side, they will be replaced with LH studs, that's the way Maw Mopar sent them out of the factory and that's the way they stay ;) :D

but they are very annoying though

when i got my car, some of the studs were replaced, and some werent
boy, that was confusing

the markings L or R are on the stud

Kind of like my shaved '53 with the three on the tree.

If you can get in it, and figure out how to shift it...lol
