How to remove carbon deposits and oil baked on heads and valve train?

Hey guys, its been a while but i finally got the springs off and the valves out of my 302 casting # heads for my 318 and now i want to clean them all up. I bought this gunk stuff thats supposed to help but whats the best way to get the carbon build up off the valves/springs/ etc? and also whats the best way to clean the cast iron heads? can i use steel wool? should i soak in the gunk stuff over night? i heard carb cleaner might work? thanks

If you have a source of steam that will work.

How necissary is it to get all the carbon off? If I get most of it off will it be fine?

Also is it important to keep the springs with the valves? Like I heard its important to label the valves to make sure they go in the same spots for sealing reasons, but can I just throw the exaust springs in a bucket and the intake in another? This would make cleaning a lot easier.
