Good news my car is now insured and I can start driving it now, but those bottles that fill the rows of your auto parts store or your Walmart almost seem convincing that pouring random stuff into the engine or transmission will make it run like new. Anyone recommend any of these? I will admit that I have put Bars Leak's Automatic Trasmission repair into my car and it didn't do anything. Also now that the car will be driving regularly is 87 Octane recommended over 85?

 

They don't even have 85 octane where I live. I have tried a few stop smoke liquids to no avail. I would just recommend to just make sure you have good clean liquids in everything, seems to work best for me. Do you have leaks or smoke or something?

And, use 91+ octane, or lower octane and octane booster

Generally, no - especially in the trany. Marvel Mystery oil is an old trick for the engine and a little can't hurt. The only other thing you have to consider with an old engine is Zinc/phosphate. Very few oils these days have enough to keep older engines happy (and running correctly). Shell Rotella is one, at least so far. ZDDP is an oil additive you might want to consider.

Well ok let's start off with that the transmission was leaking in about 5 different areas so I put that Bars Leaks stuff like a month ago, it is leaking in 4 areas and slowed down those leaks a lot. I have a 400 with a 4 barrel, don't know the compression.

I drove it tonight to a friends house and on the way back the transmission like blew or something I'll probably start a new thread describing it tomorrow sometime.

 

I like to mess with worn out engines just to see what kind of weird things I can do with them. That being said, I just bought a Bowtie sorta vehicle about 3 weeks ago, and had to drive it home about 200 + miles. It ran good, but was smoking and looked like I was going to have to rebuild it. In the past I'd used Engine Restore in similar engines with decent results, so I figured if it says to break it in with a half hour drive, why not do a 3 hour drive to really break it in? I dumped an appropriate sized can in the 350, and about 150 miles later, almost all smoking had stopped. Now it could be that it was just the rings reseating, or it could have been that good. I won't swear by the stuff, but for worn engines, I use it.

 

I use the Lucas Oil Treatment in all the race engines.... This is great for dry starts..... My engine builder says when he tears one of mine down everything has a light coat of Lucas on it... He now recommends it in all his engines.... Can't comment on if it will improve a worn engine or not... Just my experience....

 

I'm sorry I can't remember the brand name but I dumped some "octane booster / lead replacement" stuff in my tank a few weeks ago. It took a few miles to notice the difference but it was Very noticeable. It raised my idle around 300-400 rpms. I have to say it was a little disconcerting and made me rather uncomfortable. It was around $6 for enough to treat 16 gallons of fuel so it was not something I could use all the time. Nor do I think I would want to.

dont really trust any of that stuff, used lucas power steering stop leek in my Polara and i ended up having to replace the whole gear box, i used an octane booster in my old bronco, noticed a good differnce at first then i just started getting worse gas millage.... not sure if that was just cause it was a ford.... =p

 

Old wrench told me "Car repairs dont come in a can!" I put Lucas in my 95 Ram with 250k mile cause I have low oil pressure[bearings are worn out], raised the pressure, but I imagine some 80wt oil would do the same thing. Oil pump has been changed, no effect. About all I believe in is Sta-Bil for my occasional motors [generator, chain saw, mower and bikes in winter], and the occasional sea-foam. Anybody ever use the old GM Engine Top Clean?
