Magnum Vs Standard

What is the difference between a "Magnum" and Standard motor - i.e. 400 Magnum vs 400?

supposedly in the early years, "magnum" meant performance engine. The name was used for different applications, but for the 400, supposedly thats what it meant.
Was there really a 400 magnum?
