pitted bumpers

So how do you guys deal with pitted chrome bumpers? The ones on the my Valiant are pitted and I'd like to clean them up. Are they going to have to be striped and rechromed?

66sportfury Feb 23, 2009 03:39 AM

i would say yes rechromed

78D200 Feb 23, 2009 08:03 AM

Thats what I figured but wasn't sure if there was some macigally "stuff" out there that could be used.

Polaradude Feb 23, 2009 08:13 AM

Tim, I am not aware of any magic goo out there for that, I would say it's time for a re-dip.:(

If there is just hardened crust on the chrome, steel wool will clean it right up, but if its actually pitted, not much else to do but have it re-chromed. BTW, the chromer I've got here in town takes 4-6 weeks to get stuff back to me. Does that sound right, or should I take my stuff elsewhere (2 hr drive away)?

I'll try to clean it up and go from there then.

I'm not sure how long it takes to chrome items. I would think some of it depends on how busy the place is. If its a busy place then I can see it taking some time.

Grade #1 (medium) steel wool is what I found worked best

try cleaning it
if not, dont go crazy, just send it out

SOS pads or re-chrome.

Well I talked to my dad about it tonight and we are going to look around and see who can do it. I'll talk to some of the guys on some local forums and see who, if anyone, they recommend.

I like a surprise. Lets hear it now now now.

On the subject of the bumpers being cleaned, light or med. steel wool and paste wax; thats what my bud used at the used car lot he worked at.

Tim, I just take my cores to the nats and exchange them. Its like 200 plus a core from this 1 guy, always vends there. whatever you do , if you go through a vendor stay away from the bumper boyz, I bought the rear bumper for my supeebird from them awhile back, thing was twisted so bad it took 2 of us and a 6ft prybar to get the thing lined up enough to even get it on. I talked to other members of a car club Im in. and they had the same prob w/ their bumpers. caviot emptor babe.

well with the hours that I have been working lately and having to work the 6th day of the week, I'm drained to to point I sit down and fall asleep. I'll probably be working on it on sunday though. Still need to finish up the studs and get the new tires on.
