rod bearings

Can anybody tell me if its stupid to reuse rod bearings if there in good shape. I changed the rings on my 73 440 but the bearings are std and look good. I hate to spend 80 bucks for rod bearings its crazy. Thanks

Any bearing will fatigue and become brittle after time and many heat cycles, rod bearings take more abuse than main or cam bearings. You could measure or plastigage them and if ok reuse in a totally stock engine. With the performance modifications your planning I think it wise and good insurance to replace with new.

It depends what you want out of the motor. First of all why did you change the rings. If I went that far into the motor I would have blown the whole thing apart and checked the cylinder bores. Changing the rings without honing the cylinders doesn't make any sense. Sorry :yikes:

Well I took the engine apart after getting the engine home.I never heard it run. So the cylinders look good but I honed them anyway 50,000 mile engine so I thought I would at least put a new set of rings in it. I know I can only use cast rings cause they seat easy moly rings would require a bore. Thanks

If you still had the crank out of the motor I would tell you to take it to a good crank grinder and have him check it out. Make sure it's straignt and then he could comfirm the rod and mains and then polish it for you.

Not something you want to go cheap on. You are already in there, get the good parts and sleep well. What is the price of something nagging you in the back of your mind?
