Scarebird disk brakes??

Hi Guys!

Wanted to switch my front drums to disks, and I'm looking at scarebirds stuff right now. This will be a winter project if I can get the tranny fixed this summer.

From what I see the scarebirds kit just gives you the adapter brackets, you go to napa etc! and get the parts from later model Mopars to finish it off. I priced out the parts for my 64' b-body and with the scarebird parts it comes to just under $500, so the price is right, and the replacement parts are readily available.

Questions? Has anyone run a scaebird set up on a b-body? What is the smallest rim you can run? ie: whats the smallest ID you can have to clear the rotors? Would I need to replace the master clyinder as well, right now I have a single line MC for all round drum brakes, I want to upgrade but not sure which way to go?

Never heard of them to be honest bro, do they have a contact section on their web site ? I 'd check with them directly and then that way if there are any problems yer butt is covered. Keep us posted, love to hear about new products.

I just went to the site, cool stuff, thx for the heads up.

I've looked at this company too.

My 53 sorely needs a brake upgrade and they are the only ones that make an adapter plate for the conversion. Why haven't I done it yet? Well, my car ALSO has dropped spindles and I have no idea if they were custom or out of some other car.

I might just call Scarebird and go there, they aren't too far away from me. Wilwood was no help.

Keep us posted?

I've got the Wilwood set-up. Couple bucks more but do you really want chevy parts on your car? Scarebird uses chevy parts because they are "cheaper" Cheaper???? is that what you want for your brakes? This is your toy, you are going to enjoy driving it (at least you should) Spend the money for the good stuff.

If you buy the very best, you never have to worry if you got the right one.

I was only looking at the conversion plate, not the entire set-up. I thought they made them to convert Mopar to Mopar? Hm.

That explanes why they are so cheap! Guess I'll keep looking!

I recall a post or article that had instructions on how to use late 70's early 80's Mopar parts to convert the front breaks on earlier years! Going to go do some searching!

You have to run at least 15" rims. Don't know about master cylinder.I have a set of the front brakes on a 1962 polara 500 but don't have the master cylinder on yet.

I tend to disagree with some of the above. Look at the scarebird web site under the "prototype" section. The setup adapts late 70's volare/aspen calipers to your drum brake spindles. The rotor used is the unicast cordoba one. (the big 11.78 ones=yes you will need the 15" rims) You utilize the caliper adaptor bracket from the aspen/volare (etc-others are compatible). It says they can supply the adaptor if you need them. Personally, I would just use the 73 up A-body spindles. Either find some at the salvage or get them new from master power brakes. Then you will have a wide range of choices to choose from. Any disc-brake set up from the eighties rear drive cars will fit. the easiest would be the "M" body (diplomat-fury-fifth ave). this way you can keep the 14 inch wheels (with the m-body 10.5 rotors). Or, if you happen to find a Cordoba (77 on I think) you could adapt the large 11.78 rotors . But remember, you will have to use the larger 15 inch wheels with the larger rotors.
It is possibel to use the M body spindles (same as aspen volare) but this is a controversial subject among mopar enthusiasts. the m body spindle is just a tad taller and supposedly throws off the geometry. However, I have seen then used on old B-bodies with no problems. Anyway, you decide. If you could find the setup from an old dippy/fury etc, it would phsically bolt on your 64 with no problems. The only problem then is the "taller spindle controversey". just my .02

I robbed a volare of spindles, rotors, calipers and manual master cylinder and put it in my 62 and has been in the car since the mid 90's and have had no problems, and can run mopar rally wheels 14 inch
