Some help please
Hi, I'm knew and only 16. i am currently looking to buy a first car and i have come across a 1973 dodge dart with a 225 slant 6. the guy told me he will sell it for as low as $2000. i have not gone to see it yet but he says it was being driven till last fall and that it will pass inspection and what not. I would haev hopes to do a V8 swap later on down the road but would this be a good initial buy? please help i have no idea what im getting into with these mopars and im doing as much research as i can but i could use the advice from someone with more experience,
Thanks
Thanks
This is really a loaded subject. If this is an attractive hardtop (2 door) is in fairly nice shape and rust free, it'd probably be worth building, but the fact is, that if you put any power into it, say, 300hp or so, you'll "throw away" most of the suspension and drive train.
This is because the 6's had the weakest rearends, lightest springs, smallest brakes, and usually no sway bars. In addition, if it's an auto trans, that won't fit any V8.
Depending, at least some V8 swaps require a different "K" member, which is the large lower front structure which mounts the engine and lower suspension.
What I'm saying is, unless this is a REALLY nice body, you'll be spending a lot of your money on junking it out and then paying more money for V8 based components.
I'll admit----you can "get by" for awhile with the 6 rear and springs, etc, until you can afford "better."
