Towing capacity 727 tranny
 

I have a set up on my 59 ford f-250

with a '76 440 and a tranny a727b with these numbers 6A162543.

the rear axle is from what i believe is a 69 ford

im curious what a safe bet of towing capacity would be.

the truck weight on pink slip show 3500 im thinking that was estimated with all 59 ford parts

It all depends on how built up the transmission is. In stock condition, you can tow a car trailer with a truck on it, 26'-32' camper, etc. I would think your truck would limit you more than your transmission.

What do you want to tow?

i have my eye on a 68 air stream a friend of mine has
im not sure of the length
but i looked up the possibilities.


from 17' to 30'
and the weight from 2300 to 4600
hitch weight from 270 to 403

im sure the little pop campers would no problem

???

A stock 727 will be able to handle that camper no problem. The only thing that I would do is add in a tranny cooler infront of the radiator for added cooling. Heat is the #1 cause for trannies failing.

thanks for your reply. im curious what the operating temperature of the tranny fluid ideally should be in these 727s.

175*F-200*F is normal. you don't want less than 150 as it will cause your transmission to not operate properly. If you are hitting over 225*F, then you will need a larger cooler. 275*F is the max if you are towing up a steep upgrade but only recommended for a short time.

I would install an inline or tranny pan temperature sensor and run a medium size cooler. that will probably be more than enough.

i got lucky on this one the guy who tore up this old Ford new what he was doing.
theres a tranny cooler in front of my radiator

i would of left the truck as is .. but after looking it over driving it with a 440 man its tough to change something thats working..
im looking forward using it for all its practical means and than some.

If the guy built it right, then I would leave it alone and see what it does. You can always upgrade what you need later.
