warm runs rough

When i first start my car for the day it runs fine for a while, when it warms up after a while it starts to die when you put it in gear. in park or neutral it idles fine, but when you engage in gear, the engine is kinds shakey and will die unless you gas it. Once you get going its fine though, but if you let off the gas at a stop, it usually dies. what could it be?

Needle and seat in the carb.first guess

sgp7679 04-20-2009 02:48 PM

well it has a brand new rebuilt carb.

craveman 04-20-2009 04:00 PM

things can still be screwed up on rebuilds. also check to make sure your choke is opening up after a few mins.

craveman 04-20-2009 04:07 PM

thats if its an electric choke

sgp7679 04-20-2009 04:25 PM

no its not elec. choke, im thinking its the carb, ive never adjusted it and i know it needs adjustment, im no good at adjusting carbs, any tips on how to?

67 GTX 04-20-2009 04:30 PM

try turning the two idle mixture screws [near the front bottom] counterclockwise 1 1/2 turns, see what that does.

sgp7679 04-20-2009 06:31 PM

i know this is a dumb ? but is 1 turn a complete turn, example, when your looking at the screwdriver slot, and its flat and you turn it till its flat again, is that one turn or a half turn? or is it where its flat and you turn it till its flat then on the next flat revolution a complete turn?

craveman 04-20-2009 06:53 PM

a complete 360 degree rotation.

Who rebuilt the carb? I've never worked on a carb for a car, but I've rebuilt many motorcycle carbs. I once pinched the vacume piston when reassembling and it tore, leading to symptoms similar to what you are describing. Like I said, that was a motorcycle carb, but might be something to look at if easier troubleshooting steps don't work.

sgp7679 04-20-2009 07:34 PM

well i bought it new (rebuilt).

MarkyMark12345 04-20-2009 07:45 PM

Gotcha. Well I would try adjusting the idle mixture like Omaha said and see if that fixes the problem

67 GTX 04-21-2009 04:38 PM

agreed

theomahamoparguy 04-21-2009 05:02 PM

hey sgp7679

how is your carb adjusting going?

MarkyMark12345 04-21-2009 05:10 PM

FYI I edited my earlier post. It was the vacuum piston I tore, not the diaphragm

sgp7679 04-21-2009 05:51 PM

well i adjusted the screws 1 1/2 turns out. I drove it around for a while and turned it off and it wasnt doing it. Now I need to get a tach and adjust my idle, it sounds kind of high. Sometimes it still runs a little rough but hasnt died. Well it did die once, I had a/c on full blast and was coming in driveway real slow and it died.

67 GTX 04-22-2009 03:47 PM

make sure your idle isn't too high
it isnt good for auto's to have that

scotts74birds 04-22-2009 03:55 PM

Does your car have and idle/ac solenoid? Its a small device with a plunger that that is powered when the ac is on. Its job is to hold the throttle just off of idle to compensate for the compressor drag.

sgp7679 04-22-2009 05:52 PM

im not sure if it has ac idler, is it on the carb? also, on the back of the carb. where you hook up the choke vacuum, there is an extra spot to hook up another line. It sucks in air. My original carb didnt have this. I just plugged it up and its running okay. Any idea what that does? I tried to get pics but camera isnt working.

scotts74birds 04-22-2009 06:12 PM

Plugging any unused vacuum ports is a Good thing. Couldn't tell you what all the vacuum ports are for on that car, electrical is my forte. Right now carbs are making my life miserable. I've got a Mikuni on my Harley, set it 10 yrs ago and havent had to touch it yet. Wish they made 4 barrels!! Like I said, an idle/ac solenoid would stop the throttle from going to its idle position, but only slightly. Its like putting an extra turn in on your idle stop screw, but only when the a/c is on. Anyone else know if his car would have one of these? What do the old ones look like?

richinny 04-22-2009 06:13 PM

pictures please.

sgp7679 04-22-2009 07:34 PM

ill try to get some pics tomorrow, I think that I do have that ac idler.

67 GTX 04-25-2009 11:44 AM

pics?
