Wiring up for a welder?

While it's not a Mopar electrical question, I wasn't sure where to post it, and besides, i'll be using the welder for the Jeep and Plymouth both Mopars.

I have a miller mig welder. 230V 20 amps single phase. My garage has a full panel with plenty of slots and amps to spare.

I plan on putting a receptcle a few feet away from the panel for the welder, plan on using 10 gauge wire, a 50 amp recepticle and a 30 amp breaker (while the welder is rated at 20 amps it has a 50 amp 3 prong plug) does this sound good so far?

At the panel I'll need to use two breakers, one for the black one for the red wires, do I use two 30 amp breakers or two 15 amp breakers (30 amps total)? With the white wire to the neutral and the bare ground wire to the ground strap!

Does this sound correct, or do I have it *** backwards?

You will use a 30 amp "2-pole", the breaker has both sides tied together with ONE handle. You sure about the 50amp plug on the welder? The 30 and 50 amp ones look very similar. Is it used? They may have just put that plug on to match what they had in the shop. Inserting a #10 wire into a 50amp lug rated for #8 copper or #6 alum may not insure a reliable connection. See Nema chart here: http://www.hubbellonline.com/wiring/bryant/pdf/b/b5.pdf Are you using romex [cable] or piping it in? Electrician- 22years experience in EVERYTHING.

Thanks scott

I'm 99% sure it's a 250V 50 amp plug, 3 prong, one large spade and one smaller B-30 on that chart you linked. Welder is listed as 230V 1 Phase 19.89 Amps it's a miller 175 with the A-10 gun. The plug on the welder is from the factory.

Was going to use 10 or 8 gauge 3 wire cable, in a conduit. As for the wiring, the two hot wires red and black go to the two spade prongs, but would I run the white neutral wire to the ground prong or the bare copper wire and cap of the white wire? And use a 30 amp dulplex breaker.

Cable IN a conduit? Why? Pulling solid wire through conduit sucks! If you are running metal conduit then individual conductors would be fine. Unless you already have the cable, I would just buy enough stranded black wire to supply the 2 hot prongs, and 1 bare or green conductor for the ground. There is no neutral in this configuration. The green/bare wire will be connected to the green terminal of the receptacle, and bonded to the metal box, then ran to the panel and bonded to the ISOLATED ground bar, not the neutral bar. This is a Sub-Panel right? You should notice that in the sub-panel that the bare grounds and the white neutrals are separated from eachother. I'm here if ya need me.

conduit

I'm with Scott on this, no need for conduit. Use 10-2 Romex and a 2 pole 30 amp breaker. You can put red tape on the white wire if you wish or red Sharpie marker. Put the insulated wires on the breaker and the bare on the ground bar.
10 gauge wire is good for a 30 amp circuit, if you use a larger breaker you need to use larger wire.

Thanks guys, I already had the cable, and was planning on a conduit just to shield it as it's going to run behind my work bench. But looking at the cost of some 10/2 or even 8/2 wiring i'll won't be using the cable.

I'll let you know how things work out. Maybe post a pic or two of the new set up when I'm done, it's a side project so it might be a week or two to be finished.
